Announcing Engagements

If you are not confident enough to post your announcement, don't get married. I am dead serious about that. For those of you ready to get married here is how you get the word out!

How engaged am I?

You are engaged the moment you decide to marry.

I am frankly appalled at the number of people literally too worried about ex's and popular opinion to announce to the world that they are spending the rest of their lives with the person they love and the person who loves them back. It is ok to tell. Heck, it's quite ok to BRAG! Here's How:

The first people you should notify is your parents and you should do it in person. Close relatives and friends can be informed by note or phone. You might consider an engagement party as an ideal way of telling relatives and friends of the happy news. Once your relatives and friends are notified, you might consider a formal announcement of your engagement in your local newspaper and in both sets of parents' hometown newspapers.

Enclose a photo you'd like with your names and address on the back with a stamped, self-addressed envelope and they will return your photo. The picture should be one of you together. If you do not have opne you like hire a photographer(may be pricey, but the photo will be gorgeous) or go to a department store photo center(very inexpensive).

Most newspapers request announcement information at least three weeks before the wedding. The announcement generally appears the day following the ceremony. Since most newspapers receive more wedding announcements than they can print, the sooner your announcement is sent, and the more clear and concise the information, the better your chance of having it published.

Each paper will use as much of the information as it wishes, and in its own words. In general, you should provide the following:

  1. The bride’s full name.
  2. The bride’s parents’ name and town of residence.
  3. Bride’s parents’ occupations.
  4. Bride’s maternal and paternal grandparents.
  5. Bride’s school and college.
  6. Bride’s occupation.
  7. Groom’s full name and town of residence.
