Special-Occasion Hair

No matter what the occasion you want to feel comfortable and confident about your hair.

No matter what the occasion -- prom night, graduation, formal wedding or elegant party -- you want to feel comfortable and confident about your hair. Don't let anyone convince you to wear a style that is either inappropriate or uncomfortable. And don't even think about wearing a hot new style unless you're sure it will work for you; it's one thing to admire a style, another to look good in it.

Schedule a hair "trial run" long before the date of your event to decide if the look you've chosen is right for you. Determine if you will need special hair accessories. Consider whether the hairstyle you've selected is compatible with your outfit and the occasion. Schedule any necessary last-minute hair appointments for a color touch-up or a trim. Make sure the style you wear doesn't require extra maintenance during the event, and that it will stand up to whatever the weather has in store.

Although this might be a good opportunity to try something new, don't get carried away! Stick with a classic look that enhances your beauty without compromising who you are and how you see yourself. Try an elegant twist, roll or upsweep, but avoid extremes that are simply too much (too much height, color or curl).

On the big day, carry a small comb and spray with you in case of a hair emergency, and remember to check your hair in a mirror before any photographs are taken.

Karen's natural updo

To create Karen's look, wash and then dry hair using a diffuser. Use a de-frizz product before blowing dry. When dry, use fingers to brush hair up and back. When you have all of your hair in hands, twist hair towards your scalp. Use bobby pins to fasten hair. Then use a rat comb tail to loosen tucked hair from the front. Let these small pieces flow onto face. Don't loosen anymore than two or three pieces.
