Re: soon2bmsj's blog

Ok ladies-your opinions...
FH and I discussed about getting our marriage license today and we are in disagreement about the name. I want use both my maiden and his last name but HE is not trying to hear this AT ALL!!!!!!!! his reponse is "you are married and I expect you to have my name"-I don't want this to be an issue, but this is something we cannot seem to come to an agreement with. I know this shouldn't be a big deal to me and I know he may seem a little dishonored if I don't do it his way, but what about me???!!!???!!!???

Re: soon2bmsj's blog

If it is absolutely serious to keep your name, then I suggest a couple of options;

1. Do it old school. Remember those women activists with 3 names? You can drop your middle name and let your maiden name be your new middle name. I did this unofficially at on my diploma for my Masters. It was for ME since its a document that lasts forever. I will also do this on my diploma for my PhD...However officially, I did the traditional thing & dropped my maiden name.

2. Add his last name and you will have 4 names (not uncommon at all) by not hyphenating.

3. Hyphenate (but this seems to be non-negotiable).

Dropping last names is a western ideal that is not more than a couple hundreds of years old.

In Eastern societies (Asian, Arabic, Islamic) you see a lot of married women who do not drop thier last name nor is it expected that they do. I see a lot of my muslim and Chinese clients who do this. Also the wife's family is revered so much in those societies and it can be considered offensive to "disregard" her family's name...Especially since its HER FATHER's last name.

Their children have the father's last name-patrilineal
Also in the Hispanic Community women usually keep their last names (unless they have assimilated western ideals) and give their children either hypenated or non hyphenated last names.

I say all of this to tell you that it doesn't have to be a big deal. Understanding how he feels about it is important. Cause I didn't want to change my last name either. I did it and it kind of felt good. So I compromised with certain documents and my diplomas to make ME happy. So that was how we found our happy medium. Good luck...but don't let it put a damper on YOUR MARRIAGE...

Thanks Bumble-I tried compromising say I would drop my first name (because legally I sign my name E. Michelle McHanny since noone could every pronounce it correctly anyway) and just use Michelle McHanny Johnson, but he wants it to be Edwena Michelle Johnson dropping my maiden name all together! :(

I like the E. Michelle McHanny Johnson....It sounds dignified! I am sorry he won't compromise. I think that if its that important to you and you cannot see or be comfortable with dropping your maiden name, then I think you should stick to your guns. Continue to work on the compromise. I think you have bended a lot here.

I actually consulted with my Pastor on this issue since we just finished our marital counseling sessions and he said that if he is so adamant about the name change that I should not allow this to put a damper on the marriage from the start because he probably feels like by not accepting his name only that I am not being committed to being his wife :( I never thought about that, but I still have my reasons too!!!

Re: soon2bmsj's blog

My FH feels the same way that your FH does on this issue Soon. We discussed this months ago, but I have always planned to drop my name, so it never became an issue. He just always said that when I made the decision to marry him, taking his last name is something that comes with the decision, and keeping my name just seems as if I am not completely accepting him (not his words exactly). I think the way he feels about it is sort of what your pastor was saying about your FH. Just make sure the decision you make is one that both of you can live with. I know this is not the best time to have to deal with an issue such as this with everything else going on.

Soon sweetie ...obviously your reasons are important to you, does he not see it as important or does he not see it important? McHanny is your Father/Mother's name right? What could be so bad moving it forward and his last name be your last name too?

As in:

Mrs. Michelle McHanny Johnson or Mrs. E. Michelle McHanny Johnson

I guess my concern is -do the BOTH of you know EACH OTHER'S urgency for your decision to be able to make BOTH of you happy?

Everything looks beautful Soon... As for the name dropping issue, it seems to be a hassle for a number of couples (moa included). FH doesn't also seem to understand that not taking his name doesn't mean that I won't be committed to our marriage. So Good luck, hope you reach an understanding before the wedding. Meanwhile, all the best with the rest of your planning...

Ok ladies-after many questions with different people-I throw in the white flag! :(
My first ladies response:
Good afternoon, if you are getting married and this is my opinion you become one so you take on your husband last name. Why would you use both names or why would you want to keep your name? You love him right? To death right?

My name will be: E.Michelle Johnson

I like it either way. God will honor you for your humbleness and willingness to keep the peace. I would still pray on it, because you have to live with it forever. I just hope he understands what you are doing for him.....Remember this....he will have many times where he will have to bend over backwards for you too-against his own inital feelings too, just like you did for him. So kudos to you for making great steps to work this new life out! I can see you all will be alright:)

I agree with you 100% Bumble! sometimes you have to pick and choose your battles, and even though the name is very important to me, this is one battle that I have lost the will to fight... :) I don't think FH and I have EVER argued as much as we did over this issue. He is usually so conforming to what I want to do, so I was really shocked when he put on his armor to fight this one, so I guess this was very important to him.

Re: soon2bmsj's blog

Ok ladies..with 8 days to go here is where I stand:
-received guys gifts today (yea!) now just need to purchase the wine which I plan to do this weekend...what do you think?

is it too girlie to put their gifts in a gift bag or should I actually wrap them???
-will stuff favor bags next week
-both of our rings have been cleaned for that extra "bling" effect
-FH and I are getting the marriage license in the a.m.

I believe I pretty much have everything completed (thank God)!! I am getting my dress on Sat. morning after coming from the beauty shop, picking up FH's cake on the way home, and I've ordered Subs for the wait at the church. The guys are taking pics at 1, the girls at 3 so we will all be at the church for about 3 hrs before the wedding starts.
can you ladies think of anything else?!?

I like them Soon! I don't think they are girlie, however knowing me ...I would probably tie a ribbon in your wedding colors the long way around the box and bow it at the top, with maybe a little thank you tag.

Gift bags aren't girlie at all, especially if you chose a manly color such as black or dark blue. I would probably do black bags because it always make what's inside seem more elegant.

soon2bmsj's blog

Good morning ladies!! 5 days to go and I am now getting REAL excited!
I had a very interesting weekend:
-the ladies from the church had me a "suprise" bridal shower at On The Border (since I had requested not to have a shower) it was really nice!! afterwards, we went to a Karoake place and had a blast!! (I would have had pics had I known about this)
-checked with the hotel and all out of town guests have booked their rooms so I am happy about that!
-had our last counseling session last night and went over the ceremony with our Pastor! he seems just as excited as us!! LOL
-ladies..I don't know if I am going to make it down the isle in one piece :( yesterday our sermon was from 2 Cor and it was talking about how sufficient God's grace is and how it is just enought for us to make it thru or trials and tribulations...his msg title was 'Never Would Have Made It' so after the sermon of course during altar call our Minister of Music sang the song and EVERYBODY IN THE CHURCH LOST IT!!!!!!!! including me!!! I was having a real hard time keeping it together already because that song is my personal testimony-but I had a prayer warrior walk over to me and say-Sis. God told me to come and let you know that you made it thru your storm of losing your son only because of your faith in him and you are going to be alright now--well that was it!!! it was O-V-E-R for a sistah!!! Please keep me lifted up in prayer because I am really hoping I can make it down the isle without falling apart!!
-all other tasks seem to be on point except during the discussion of the ceremony I realized after printing up 175 programs on my "special" paper I ordered I left off the ceremony info on Jumping the Broom which I REALLY wanted to include-but hey can't sweat the small stuff now! :)

You know I think you mentioned that Never Would have Made It song on another thread, I downloaded it on the same day, and I must have played it one hundred times since. It is a powerful song, and it speaks the truth. I am glad you got a Suprise Shower- (even though you requested not to have one)you seem like the kinda person who makes people wanna make an extra effort- never met you- but i get the sense that its something you would do for someone else.

IMO -

1. Tell her that's not an option! Wait ..when I think about it one of my hostess did put her jeans on bc "she was working" ...damn just thought that ...

anyway

2. Something like

Or the color offsetting the girls ...I don't remember the color they are wearing.

Soon are you doing a garter toss? If so, maybe you should wait until after cake cutting to change. That way you can enjoy FH shifting and searching through all that material looking for the garter. Doing it after the cake would really signify "It's time to party ya'll"
