I didn't know that my mother was against them until I mentioned that I wanted one for my wedding. She thought of them as degrading since it stems from Black people having to work around getting married when they were slaves and there is no need for us to do it now. She thinks that it's a silly trend that only caught on because people saw Roots. I never thought of it that way. I'm just a craft queen and enjoy the thought of creating one, jumping together, and hanging it in my kitchen for the rest of our years together.
I'm choosing to do what I like, but I still want to know how you ladies feel about jumping the broom and will you do it for your wedding.

I love to see couples jumping the broom. We jumped the broom but we didn't have anyone do a reading before hand regarding it's significance. You can tell your mother to view it as a symbol of how far we as a people have come.

well your mom is on the right track-but to me the symbolism is much deeper...go google "jumping the broom" and you will get alot of history..this is what I am having read at our ceremony before we jump:
"Our ancestors saw the wedding broom not only as the threshold of the Holy Land of Matrimony, but as a means of sweeping away evil from the paths of their lives. We have jumped the wedding broom today as a vow to remember our past with pride to re-claim and relate our heritage and our customs and to sweep away hatred, cruelty and prejudice from our paths,
Thank you,
For celebrating our union and our heritage
and for remembering with us.
I'm trying not to have a bunch of readings during my ceremony also. It really isn't necessary to have one for a broom jump. I've done all I can to explain the meaning behind the broom to her, but if my mother wants to see us as Amos and Andy, so be it. Just as long as she helps us with the wedding budget. :P

LOL!!!!!!!!!!
I'm doing broom bouquets for my bridal party and they don,t want to carry them . But it.s something that I think is really pretty so they are going to carry them.
6 months until we become one
Personally I love to see this incorporated into wedding ceremonies, although we didn't personally jump when we were married.
Broom jumping has different meaning to each couple. Pam Crow and Soon2bmsj have offered some wonderful suggestions on how it could be viewed.
Butterbean do what your heart desires! All the best!

If you want to include the significance you can put that piece in the program rather than have it read aloud

DH didn't want to do it, he said he's not a slave and has never been one and didn't feel we needed to jump the broom anymore....His words not mine...I didn't care one way or another....

I love the idea of jumping the broom. I think it has become a party of our culture, and I feel that it pays tribute to our heritage.

we will be Jumping the Broom
Our way of saying that we are sweeping away all the old and going into a new journey together... and i will be putting the passage about it in the program because everyone already knows what it symbolizes.

Welcome Shy41208,
Now that's a good reason to jump the broom.
