Re: Brooklyn Planner

Sorry, I've not heard of her, which is not unusual. There are so many planners in New York, I doubt that all of us know of each other. If you're a christian darling, pray about it and make your decision. Go with your gut instincts. The biggest being that you like her and her ideas. That is major in choosing a planner. You know that she will take your ideas and run with it. You don't need a planner that will overrule you or belittle your choices. Go with your gut feeling on this one darling because there are too many of us in New York to count.

Good luck to you and welcome to the sisterhood.

G ...how long have you been planning? and how did you get started? do you have an event you are working on now? and what's a fair price to pay an event planner ...is 10% of wedding the norm for payment to the planner ..and when do they get that?

Sorry for so many questions ...

Re: Brooklyn Planner

Hello there Turiya,

I've been an event planner for 17 years, but specializing in weddings for the past 12 years. I got started as a fluke really. My then BFF was getting married (she has since past away in the Iraq war. She was a career army girl). Anyways, my BFF was getting married and the planner she hired was never available to us. She wouldn't return phone calls. She would send us to appointments and then don't show. I was her MOH and I was livid!!! My BFF and I ambushed her office one day in her office and fired her. She had the nerve to tell me "Why don't I handle everything then since I think that I could do a better job of it". I told ther that I would and look out for the invitations so she could witness my brilliance. I planned the whole thing and she attended the nuptuals and that night offered me an intership with her company. Currently, I'm working on 2 weddings, one in MD, and the other in VA (yes, I do travel). I would like to eventually get to the point where I can do 2 weddings a month. I'm still praying and waiting for that blessing to happen.

Remember that the price of an event planner should be figured in your budget. Some planners have fixed prices for their services as they have different wedding packages, some just do a percentage anywhere from 18% to 25% of your wedding budget and others do a combination of both. I charge a flat fee because I have different packages for weddings up to a certain budget and then beyond that, I charge a percentage of the wedding budget.

10% is not the norm to pay a planner because they also have overhead and even in your planning guides it would tell you to set aside 18% - 25% of your budget for a planner. If you find one that charges 10% that's great, but maybe they're just starting and need to grow their reputation as well. Pending on the contract that you sign with a planner, it's customary to pay at least 50% of the fee, then work out a payment plan for the balance to be payed 2 weeks to a month prior to your event.

My sister, never be afraid to ask questions. It was a pleasure for me to answer those little ones that you did have. If you have more questions for me, please don't hesitate to ask. We're sisters in here and besides, you offered to kick the butt of that girl that my ex was cheating on me with. The least I can do, is offer you some advice.

Happy Wedding!!!

Re: Brooklyn Planner

Thanks for all the knowledge ...I really am ENJOYING planning my wedding ...and I've been requested to do all kinds of invitations since I did one for my sister's bridal shower ...the request have been coming full forced since then ...that was June and I've done her invites for the shower, her programs for the wedding, 2 baby showers, and 1 tea party ...also I did her games at the bridal shower ...and was requested to do 3 parties after, and did the cooking for 3 of those parties ...I didn't charge for anything (family and friends like family)...wouldn't know what to charge (that's why I asked about the money part) ...

I really enjoy it doing it all ...and I wondered how would I started a side business doing so ...Is that your only career?

How much would it be for me to hire you as my wedding day coordinator?
