I think a buffet-style reception should be a lot cheaper. Plus, it givs you the oppportunity to offer more variety to your guests. I don't plan to use a seating chart.
When doing my research, I did find that buffet style receptions are much cheaper than sit down dinners. I am having a buffet style, and also creating a seating chart. I will not place each guest in specific seats, only at specific tables.

It'll cost me more if I let them fools serve themselves! Some of the nurses from my church have offered to work the buffet stations serving the food for me!
I'm doing a buffet reception. I don't think I'm going to assign seats or tables outside of the parents and head table. I have too many "special" people who feel that they are so important and constantly go their own way (nothing malicious thank God, just different).

We also decided on buffet. It actually cost us the same for sit down or buffet. But buffet gave us more menu options. We also created a seating chart to keep kind of keep order.
You will save a lot with a buffet vs. per plate reception. We're having a buffet, we're doing the table chart, but we're not assigning seats. As long as they know which table they're in, it will all work out very smoothly.
We did a buffet, but no seating charts, except for seating our parents and grandparents. We didn't have much trouble for that. I think that buffets are cheaper and even cheaper if its lunch time. Its really cheap at a restauraunt or hotel because they get deals on food. I found that private caterers are not that much cheaper than the buffet because they don't get as great a discount, plus they have to include staffing in the overhead and your cost.... Full-time staffers at hotels and restaurant are paid their usual hourly wage because they are already employed usually full-time or part-time at the facility...With private caterers they are often PT so they will ask for 100+ per staff person so they can make their money, unless the pvt caterer is completely full time with full time staffers-then they are no different from a hotel's catering department.
i am hoping everyone will mingle so i'm not doing a seating chart. we are doing heavy h'orderves in a buffet style, i think it will work out nicely. i want a mingling kind of feel, not so much formality
We did a buffet-style reception. We accidentally did not do any seating charts -- (actually I did, but I left them home the day of the wedding). It worked out fine though. All of our guests had a great time and everything flowed very smoothly.
I have a stupid question. When you did the table chart your just assigning people to a table number right?
Remember Abeni, there are no stupid questions!! But yes, you are correct. Well I haven't gone through the process yet, but this is what I plan to do. I am having a buffet style reception with a seating chart, just to assign each person to a specific table. Some people assign specific tables and seats, but I don't really care about the specific seats.
You can have a table number or a table name, i.e. Crystal, Gold, Platinum or whatever you want. Remember it is your day.
This is a very good idea! I've only seen table numbers used, never even thought of using names. Might have to use this one! Thanks DaughterRhonda!
We're doing pictures of us in special places for table names (i.e. Columbus Park, Buckingham Fountain, etc.).
Question: For those that did or plan to do a buffet, did you have place settings with real china or just a stack of plastic plates at the beginning of the stations?
Future ...I'm doing the stack of plates thing ...but it'll be a little nicer than it sounds .. :) I laughed when I saw ..."or just a stack of plastic plates at the beginning of the stations?"
However, I am using the table naming, and was just going to ask my sisters for some creative names ...I've started off with Mistle Toe, Sugar Cookie, Warm Chocolate ... I have about 16 tables ...
I'l probably do the plastic plate thing. Unless someone is going to open their wallet and pay for anything other than that, I'm not worry about what they say.

Plat, good to have you there with me! Since the plates won't be on the table I figured it didn't matter. My MOH was not fond of the idea though! I'll have the clear plastic plates and keep it moving. Who cares what the holder looks like as long as you're eating a good meal!

Have you found this to be cheaper than doing a sit down dinner?
Are you creating a seating chart even though it is a buffet?

Heck yeah it was cheaper!!!!! No, I did not make a seating chart. It all worked out in the end, though.
