Hair Shedding..

Lately my hair has been shedding terribly. My hair is permed. It is shoulder length. And I have no color added. I go to the hair salon every two weeks. I've had deep conditioners..etc..but it still continues to shed. Could someone please give me advice of what to do to help resolve this problem.

Re: Hair Shedding..

I think shedding happens when hair is not getting enough moisture. Do you use a hair dress everyday or a leave-in conditoner before you style your hair? This time a year, the air lacks moisture and so hair suffers. Also try not to use deep condtioners too often because they usually contain protein. Too much protein can cause the hair to become dry and brittle. Try alternating between a moisturizing shampoo and condtioner with a deep conditioner.

Hope this helps!

Re: Hair Shedding..

My problem is recently my hair has begun to fall out excessively. And what I mean by excessively is every time I comb it, the hair comb is full. I can run my fingers through and literally pull out strands of hair. My hair is pretty long and tends to tangle very easily when wet. I don't know what to do! I know it has a little to do with overprocessing. But I've cut down on that tremendously. Currently I use Soft and Beautiful regular relaxer about every 5-6 weeks. I try to wash my hair at least once a week.

I use creme of nature detangling shampoo for dry hair. I also use S & B conditioner that comes in the relaxer kit every time I wash my hair. And lately I've also been using a leave in treatment called Fermodyl by Revlon after shampoos and Infusium leave-in every other day. I dread going in the salon and plus I don't know of anyone in my area that can do any good. Somebody please help me...It is getting out of control.

Have you checked your diet? are you drinking enough water, eating enough protein and fruits and veggies. I disagree about the deep conditioner response of the other poster. I'd recommend a protein treatment or two. Also, has there been weird weather where you live? ie...cold followed by unseasonable warmth? Your body may be adjusting etc... think that there has been a change in season etc....

good luck

It may be stress. Take a break from the salon for a month. It may give your hair a much needed break.

Re: Hair Shedding..

The thing is your hair is going to shed. I thought I was having the same problem but I get my hair done every week and my stylist says that a person sheds up to 100 strands a day. So if your hair is coming out in clumps and you are bald in spots then that's a problem, but you're going to shed hair. The longer the hair the more you are going to shed. Think about it, everytime we get a perm, the hair is thinned out at that point in the hair (line of demarcation as the new growth is growing out). So as the hair grows out longer and we're brushing, and combing, and styling, that hair is going to break off at the point many times. All you can do is cut down on your styling such as excessive heat (curling and drying) and even over moisturizing can make the hair too soft. 2 products I use that really makes my hair healthy and shiny and its growing is Soft and Beautiful herbal aloe therapy daily moisturizer (smells great) and Kera Care glossifier (makes the hair stronger and grow, helps it shine, and cuts down on itching and dandruff). Hope this helps.

Last summer my hair was shedding terribly. I was ready to cut it down to the scalp and start over. I read an article in Essence magazine about a great haircare product called Aveda. I found a black salon in Philly called Xquisite Hair Design that carried the product. A stylist in the salon named Sheena gave me a nice cut and explained how to use the bag full of products that i purchased. This Aveda stuff works. My hair is now in fantastic condition and I have been recomending this product to everyone.

You relax every 5-6 weeks????Are u kidding?
Sorry to sound this way, but that is faaaaar too often. I thought all the relaxers said 6-8 weeks?
I have seen lovely heads of hair thin out before my very eyes over the years because of overprocessing. Right now, I am working with this girl who is now complaining that her hair is thinning out and she doesnt know why. Then she says she relaxes it ever month. What did she expect? Seriously?
I wait at LEAST 8 weeks, and sometimes up to 12 weeks, no matter how difficult the growing in stage is to deal with.

By the way, ladies make sure your hairdresser is only putting relaxer on the new growth. If she keeps putting relaxer over relaxer you will soon have no hair left.

relaxing every 12 weeks?

WOAH! Ok I am definately part of a growing crowd of ignoramouses! I didn't know that I should wait that long. My hair is brillo pad rough though in between and will break right at the new growth perm border. I will ask my hairdresser about the correct waiting period. But I am sure doing a home perm is why we may over do the relaxing. Bad product with no staying power maybe??

Re: Hair Shedding..My story

I'm looking for a product that promotes thicker hair growth. After my hair-wash nightmare last year, my hair is long but not thick like it use to be. Lately, my hair has been shedding excessively as well. I get a perm every 8-10 weeks, I wash & condition it (pantene pro-v for women of color) every two weeks. I oil & wrap my hair *even when it doesn't cooperate* every nite before bed, so I never have to use curling irons. This is my program 24/7/365! I don't style or color my hair either. Any suggestions?

I'm having hair drama right now girl. I've been using Shea Butter, on my scalp after washing. (I swear by Porosity Control Shampoo and Conditioner) When I went natural 3 years ago that's all I used so I went back to that. It's helping.

Re: Hair Shedding..

I'll have to try some Shea butter, then...I use Porosity Control to work out my kinks. Do you use it as the conditioner or a separate treatment all together?

Re: Hair Shedding..

8, 10, 12 weeks between relaxers?? You guys are better than me!! I have really thick, coarse, shoulder-length hair and usually after 5 or 6 weeks , my scalp gets real sore or sometimes, I have breakage.Right at the point of where the relaxed and new growth meet. The only time I let my hair go longer between relaxers,is when I wear microbraids.Last time I had a bout with severe shedding, I got my ends trimmed and that really slowed it down. Right now, I use Precise relaxers(good for sensitive scalp),Cream of Nature shampoo(ultra moisturizing),and Dark&Lovely Dry Hair healer(conditioner w/Shea Butter).I wrap my hair at nite w/Restore&Repair by Dark&Lovely (reconstructive hair therapy). These work great for me.Also, try Organic Root Stimulator Carrot Oil.Its supposed real good for shedding.God Bless!!!

Re: Hair Shedding..

Hello,
i need help with my hair. For the past 6 months, my hair has been shedding. I have full hair and i recently changed my relaxer from dark and lovely to olive oil. The last person who relaxed my hair said that because i wait long to relax my hair, it causes it to break or shed, coz i have very thick hair too. I try at least to wrap my hair every night and i oil my scalp like 3 times a week but every time i comb my hair a lot of it sheds. I can see it in my comb and on my shirt or on the floor. Its crazy. Can anyone suggest something that ican do. (i dont have an option of going to the hair dresser here)

Hello and welcome to the site. You may have to trim your ends. Also, I hear that Organic Root Stimulator Carrot Oil is good for shedding. Are you under a lot of stress? That could also be the reason. You may want to try hair vitamins.

Re: Hair Shedding..

Hey Shed, welcome to the site, like Platinum suggested, the shedding may be due to stress. I think its also imp. to make sure that whoever is relaxing you hair knows what they're doing...In the past I had a few improperly applied relaxers that caused a lot of damage. Something else to consider is that during the winter months our hair and scalps tend to be drier and so you may want to look into a really good deep conditioner and leave in conditioner.

Re: Hair Shedding..

Hey ladies, I have a friend who was having hair shedding issues as well. She took herself to a dermatologist who prescribed a special shampoo. Her hair has stopped shedding. Her doctor also told her to stop perming her hair. While that may not be an option for some of you, I would like to recommend that you seek the advice of a medical practitioner because their may be something else going on. Good luck in any event.

Re: Hair Shedding..

Hey guys,
thanks for the advice i just checked the board. I am going to try to do more deep conditioning and using the organic hair stimulator. I do get under a lot of stress real easy but is that enough reason for my hair to literally fall out (right now it still looks full). I'm just concerned that it would thin out, i dont want to lose my hair again :(. The weather here is really cold, it snows every other day or every day. I'm due for a perm in 2 weeks but i'm kind of scared of what could happen. I want to give my hair a chance. If you have any other ideas please let me know. I cant afford to go to a doctor but i could try the vitamin pills.
Thanks guys
Shed :)
