Short Natural Hair

Hi everyone!

I recently decided not to perm my hair anymore. It is thin and damaged. For the past six months I've been wearing my hair natural. I want to have my hair grow in healthy. However, I don't know what to do with it on my wedding day. I have a short afro. Please help with any suggestions. I want to look my absolute best. Thanks Ladies.

Re: Short Natural Hair

Two years ago my hair fell out due to stress. It was so short I didn't even have a mini-fro. I started using (pure) shea butter on my hair and a months time it had gown out enough to twist. Natural hair is so beautiful. Try twisting or scrunching it.

Re: Short Natural Hair

Thanks Phenomonique,

Great idea. I will certainly look into twisting it. I have a friend that wears her hair twisted and it is absolutely beautiful. My hair is growing in very nicely since I've decided not to perm it anymore. I'm going to check out a few salons that do twisting and make myself an appointment! Thanks.

Re: Short Natural Hair

If it is not too difficult, try to find a beauty salon with African hairdressers. I can't begin to tell you just how amazing they are with natural hair and growing it. I saw a bride once and her hair was braided back from her face and the back woven into the shape of a hibiscus! Just amazing and it did not look Ghetto-like if you know what I mean. So elegant. But then she was a gorgeous girl herself. I will try to find pics of natural hair for you. Look in our hair gallery for other ideas for now.

Re: Short Natural Hair

Did you find anything yet? Finding pics is pretty hard! Did you consider pressing it out? I wore my hair pressed all through High School. It got so thick and black people swore it was a wig! A salon can press it and cut it so that when you wear it naturally kinky it will still look great. I found a fun site where thweyy discuss natural wedding hair as well as the maintainance of your pretty 'fro. happynappies-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

I'm going to get my hair done in flat twist today. I'll keep getting it twisted every week for a month. For the month of May I'll wear braids, and in June I cutting it down to the new growth. I'm going natural again!

Re: Short Natural Hair

I have been natural for the past three years and I love it. I keep it cut where it's about 6 inches blown out and 2 inches kinked up. I had one of my bridesmaids ask me recently if I was getting "that stuff" pressed for the wedding. For me, my hair is a political statement, so I intend to be nappy for my big day! I normally do my own hair, but I'm meeting with a natural hairstylist next month to see what kinds of style ideas she has. If I can't find anything I like, I've decided to go with my short and curly do under my veil. It looks pretty, and more than anything, it truly represents who I am. So, my advice is to stay natural and enjoy the essence of it as you transition into married life!

my hair is bullet stoppin-thick when it's natural, so I use a clarifing shampoo, a moisturizing conditioner, and shea butter.

Re: Short Natural Hair

You had your hair combed as a child, and you didn't die! That's b/c your mama combed through the naps after she washed it. The same is true now. I don't comb my hair unless it's wet. I'll wash it and comb the conditioner through in the shower then style it by fluffing the curls/kinks. If I'm blowing it out, I'll comb it with the conditioner in it, put a detangler in it, and blow dry with the comb attached. You would definitely pull your hair out if you tried combing through it dry.

Actually NO! - I don't like combing now and I didn't like it then....my mom bald my hair for the same reason.

AWESOME! That's the way to be. Be proud of your hair and who you are. Hair is NEVER too nappy IMHO so go for it! Also I think it's really sexy. I worn it natural and fried dyed laid to the side, weaves, ponytails wigs you name it. Your hair is so much about who you are and what you are about.

For me personally I am really not into the natural look - I would have liked to try it but I am not willing to make the sacrifice - I see myself as classic sophisticated (not age appropriate for me) but I really like the love knotts or an elegant twist - growing up I always noticed the grown ladies with their hair beautifully done and ever since then I've been hook. I will keep my perm and my elegant love knotts :-) that's me!

Hats off to the natural Ladies. My hair resembles a million "black power fists" in its natural state.Lol.However, I considered long, thin dreds.I'm still thinking about it if I have another problem with breakage.I look too much like my father to have a short and natural style though.

[lol] NO ONE wants to be mistaken for their FATHER!!! Mo try PCJ detangler for children. It works like magic on the thickest hair. I would not be able to do my daughter's hair without it and the comb will come right through. Also consider buying a maxiglide.

Rosey is right. PCJ detangler is the BEST!!!!! I won't even attempt to wash my daughter's hair without it! She has thick hair also and it is a must have in the cabinet.
