Any Experts on China Selections?

My fiance and I have both sold our tiny townhouses/condos and bought a house with an actual formal dining room. We just bought a China Buffet and Hutch but I have no idea how to go about selecting China patterns, etc. to fill it up. I went to Crate and Barrel....got overwhelmed and came straight here...LOL

Do I want Bone China, Porcelain...what? I want to include our china pattern on our wedding registry, but I don't even know where to begin.

2ndTime, when you go to register there should be a bridal consultant to assist you, it can get overwhelming looking at too much of everything and I can definitely relate to what you are talking about. You should not hurt your head to much on whether its china or porcelain--unless you are actually into things like that. Pick something that you will actually use someday and not have in the closet too scared to use it. I will be the first to tell you to stay away from big bold bright flower patterns, looking to much at them will only frustrate you and that is an actual fact. Simple is always so elegant and remember the rule, less is more.

Charlotte wishes you all a beautiful Christmas filled with loads of love, laughter and the true meaning of this blessed season.

GIRL! I love china. I have a collection worthy of someone 50 years my senior. The questions to aak yourself are:

  1. Do I have small Children?
  2. How often will I entertain formally?
  3. What are my favorite styles? Modern? Casual? Traditional? Fantasy?

Don't go to a store yet. Look online first and at your leisure. Don't get chichi china if you like barbeque and casual dining. If you are really into sushi think about asian or japanese style china. In any case you need two kinds to start. Everyday stoneware and a formal setting for 8. Never under 8. That is the size of a perfect dinner party.

Re: Any Experts on China Selections?

Thanks...there was just so many selections out there, I panicked. I don't think I ever saw my mom's china or silver come out of the china cabinet. So people actually use the china? It is not just for decoration? LOL (JK) Both of your ideas are great. I have two boys that I am bringing into the marriage (3 and 12). So in a perfect world, they won't be in the dining room. In reality, I do need to take that into consideration.

Rosetta, do you have any sites to recommend for china?

Pick something that's not too busy, keep in mind you'll be eating off of it. Some prints can honestly make your stomach turn when food hits it. I have 3 set of Wedgewood China which equal 12 place settings. I did a mix and macth thing, it's really cool. When I moved to New York I packed it away and haven't taken it out yet. I only used it on the holidays, but I have a toddler now so it can stay right where it is for now.

I agree with Phenomonique on that. I registered Lenox Eternal. Very simple pattern.

Wow, choosing a china pattern makes me feel really grown. That's deep. I am not really the type of person to be into things like this. But, my guess is, one day I'll wish I had registered for China. I'm sure you'll make the right decision. Please let us know which pattern you choose.

Re: Any Experts on China Selections?

I went to Mikasa.com and there was a lot to choose from and the prices were very reasonable.

I liked Cameo Gold HK302 and L3201. I also liked Endless Love - AN001. But my fiance is more traditional. I printed out though. I am going to try sway his attention to the Endless Love selection.

Oh look at Ross-Simmonds.com. Their prices are awesome. 60% of and they deliver to your door. They carry Mikasa and Lenox (personal favorites) and you can search based on your preferences, i.e. casual, traditional or brand!
