Hey everyone, I just decided to get my bride's maids dresses maid by a seamstress. Has anyone else considered this option and if so what prices have you encountered? Do you think that it's worth it?

Honey...I do not know how good this seamtress is but she could never be too good to sew for my wedding. Personally, I think there are too many wonderful affordable dresses out there to take a chance with someone making a mistake on such an important piece of clothing and not to mention them not being ready in time....This is only my foolish opion but there is no way I will take the chance....oh unless the seamtress is Vera Wang herself.
Charlotte wishes you all a beautiful Christmas filled with loads of love, laughter and the true meaning of this blessed season.
Laneirh, my daughter was a bridesmaid in my cousin's wedding this past September. The dresses were gorgeous and I paid $75.00 for labor and materials (you may be able to find a dress already made for this price). The only thing I want to bring to your attention is because we lived out of town (we are in NY), we sent my daughter's measurements to the seamstress (who lives in South Carolina) -- something went wrong and the dresses were a little off. We were at the seamstress house the night before the wedding (until 1:00am) trying to sort things out -- luckily this sistah had skill and she was able to make the adjustments and my daughter looked stunning -- the dress looked like I bought it from a bridal boutique and she can definitely wear it again.

I was in a wedding two years ago and all the BM's gowns were made, and not by the same seamstress. You could tell too; the MOH and I went to this seamstress in Maryland and the other thre BM's had theirs made by some woman in Texas. I say it like that because the gowns looked like someone just threw them together. So, please make sure this person can not just sew, but fit/size the items to the correct porportions.
The key Laneirh is as Phenomonique said your seamstress should be able to sew. Does she have references, does she have a portfolio? The measurements that were taken for my daughter were taken by another seamstress and sent down to SC -- and for whatever reason they were off. However, the seamstress my cousin chose has sewn for many weddings and for all body types, shapes, etc. As I stated before she had skill so she was able to pull it all together and everything worked out thank goodness. In any event Laneirh, I wish you all the best.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I have been tolling with this issue for months. For some reason I just was not finding a bm dress that I truly loved. I recently went into a fabrics store and was browsing thru a few books and found a dress that was simple but elegant. Right then I knew it was the one. My mother and future mother-n-law have refered me to 2 seperate people. This weekend I plan on spending some quality time with both women to get a feel for there craft. I've been in situations myself where measurements were off and the dress had to be redone 12 hrs b4 the wedding. And I don't expect to endure that with my "Girls". So, with that said, thank you for the advice and I will keep all that in mind when I make my final decisions. Thanks again ladies...
I will apologise if I sound cynical but I am still not sold on the seamtress idea.....Lanierh why don't forward a copy of the dress to Pheonomonique and challenge her to find it....I bet she can!, and I am sure at a price that will be less than the seamtress.
Charlotte wishes you all a beautiful Christmas filled with loads of love, laughter and the true meaning of this blessed season.
Ladies, I had been looking for bridesmaids dresses. The ones in the Bridal shops were expensive or I had limited style choices because of the color (gold).I looked on the internet and found the perfect bridesmaids dresses for $79.99.But just last week, I went into a regular boutique in Tampa and saw the same dresses for only $59.00.I spoke with the owner and he is willing to order as many needed for my big day and will give me a volume discount.I also saw flower girl dresses and junior bridesmaids dresses as well.Long story short... check out some of your local boutiques not necessarily your Bridal salons. You just may find what you're looking for and it may be cheaper than hiring a seamstress.
I love this site!Thank you.Believe me, it hasn't been an easy task to find these dresses. Now, to get the bridesmaids to cooperate is another subject...
Plantinu...honey I am so happy you found what you were looking for but what's this about bridesmaid and cooperation....girl don't make me get upset!...who's wedding is this again?...it's your way or the highway--straight-up!!
Charlotte wishes you all a beautiful Christmas filled with loads of love, laughter and the true meaning of this blessed season.
Oh my goodness PlantinumStyle, I hope they realize what a blessing it is to be in your wedding -- in life we should spend as much time as we can celebrating the good!

Okay, I think I will forward a copy of the dress to Phenomonique and see what she says....She is the Diva with the answers :) And her suggestions always seem to make the situation better...
I actually support the seamstress idea provided all your bridesmaids are accesible enough to the seamstress. I was blessed to have a family friend offer to make my dress, BM's dress, FG's dress and all the alterations for my husbands suit. She was excellent!! It worked for us cuz we had a small bridal party and already knew what the seamstress was capable of.

Good news ladies, I have decided not to go the seamstress route and instead, I picked out a dress for my girls. It is an A-line dress, that ties on one shoulder. You can see it on www.robertabridal.com I think on the site the dress is in pink but mine will be a cranberry color. I am so excited that I found something that I truly like and works in a budget I was setting for my ladies...

Laneirh, the best thing you can do is talk to both ladies and like you said get a feel for their craft. In any event, I wish you much success!
