Making a Cake

What do you ladies think about making your own wedding cakes?FH suggested I try to make my own cake to save a few $hundred. My SIL made a "wedding" cake for her class husband for her senior year and it was beautiful (economics school experiment which I think all kids should have to do). She gave me all the tips she used and it sounds pretty easy and even offered to help me. Will I be in over my head to bake and design a cake of my own.I will need enough cake for 100 people and you guys know how big that can be.

i think that is a good idea and a money saving tip, but you must reember that it requires a lot of time, just mae sure that you have that time to put into it. you dont wanna make the cake to early, but you dont wanna be tired on the wedding day. but i say that if you have enough time then DO IT GIRL< MORE POWER TO YOU< I HOPE ALL WORKS OUT FOR YOU

If the SIL has experience ask her to do it -- or to take the lead on it and you just help.

Re: Making a Cake

Amen! You are right zcommons. I had a friend of my mother's make my cake. I gave her the picture and she made the ugliest thing I had ever seen. If I had it to do over I would spent the money and have a professional do it. I surely wouldn't attempt something as elaborate and time consuming as a wedding cake myself. People go to culinary schools for YEARS to become a pastry chef. Think about that before attempting it a few days before your wedding when you are trying to keep all the details straight!

Also you don't want to be upset with a relative when the cake isn't what you expected or it never makes it to your reception. It takes days sometimes to make a wedding cake. PROPERLY. It is one of the most important elements of your wedding so think about it long and hard. Consider getting a "dummy" cake make that looks like a wedding cake and serve sheet cake from the back. no one will know and it will save hundreds on the cake cost.

Publix has many cake designs at about $85 for 100-150 people.

Now, yall know that I'm a do-it-yourself bride. But, I draw the line at making my own cake.No Ma'am.I'm going to Wal-Mart or Publix for my cake.I'll let the professionals handle that one. But, if you can do it, go for it.

I made a chocolate three-tier cake just to see if I could do it (the things I do when I bored). I went to a purchased the fondant flowers to put on it, and I know how to do the deocative icing to trim the perimeter of the cake. Make the grooms cake instead. I make provocative cakes for bachelor/bachelorette parties.

I think I just may be in over my head. The "Dummy Cake" idea sounds good. So Rosy (or anyone) how would I go about getting one of these "dummy cakes"? Do I get it from the Bakery? If I dont do that then I may just go to walmart, there are 2 near me.I know me and I would really be mad if someone messed up my cake. I will hold a grudge on her and that wont be good.

keep in mind that walmart does notDeliver the cake. you will have to put it up and set up yourself, i'm not sure about the walmart were you live but the 1's in new mexico dont Deliver, so check in to that before you order the cake unless your wedding planner can pick it up or someone else that you trust

Happy I dont have a wedding palnner,I'm doing all the planning myself.I really doubt that the walmart near me will deliver. If not it wouldnt be a big deal to pick it up. I will just find the nearest walmart to my wedding /reception site and pick it up afterward. I can get someone to get it if its near by. Have anyone bought their cakes from Walmart brfore? Do they do traditional cakes like a bakery? can you customize the design you want? Are they reasonably priced? Do you have to go to a certain walmart or can you go to any walmart?

Re: Making a Cake

My cake turned out great! Chocolate with cream cheese frosting, down side-way too much cake for my family! I sent some to my BIL, MIL, cousins, neighbors...they said it was delicious. I used five boxes of cake mix..the secret to making a cake taste like it's from scratch is to blend flavors (french vanilla mixes well with any flavor).
You can rent a dummy cake from most bakeries, and then serve a regular sheet cake to your guest.

Thats what I'm wondering too Happy. Nique if you do ship a cake here to Cali where I am or to Maxico where Happy is will it get damaged in the shipping process? I really need a good cake and if I dont have to deal with my local bakeries I will be even happier.

I thought about doing that too! It's a great idea but can be costly. Since we're having alot of guest i thought about having a small cake per table.

Re: Making a Cake

mini cakes are AWESOME! but they can be so pricey when told it's for a wedding. Ask if you can get it in pastel colors or somethig and say it is for a corporate event or a big birthday bash. I bet it will be less than the $15 per cake. We were going to offer them on this site, but they arejust so pricey! Very great idea though!

Go to a bakery that you like. Find one that specialize in specialty cakes. better tasting cake and they will be experienced in shipping and decorating.

My cake was so butt ugly! When I get my courage up I will post it for ya'll! lol

This is my question. If you have a dummy cake, but serve sheet cakes that's in the back, how do you do the cake cutting ceremony on a dummy cake? I really want to use this idea, but don't know how that would work.

Re: Making a Cake

SeptBride I think you put one or two layer of real cake on top and then you cut from there. That is still an option for me.Rosey are you serious, $15 a CAKE! What the heck, For something so small I didnt think it would cost that much, I was thinking maybe half that price per cake. Just to be clear I 'm talkng about the little sample round cakes I always see on "Whose Wedding is it Anyway?". I always see these cute little cakes that are about the size of your palm.....those cost $15? at that price I might as well get a big cake thats like $5 a slice.

Re: Making a Cake

i am baking my own cake... i took 6 months of a culinary class and some wilton cake decorating stuff on the side, its not difficult at all and suprisingly easy, i already had my own cake recipes, my cake will be 3 stacked layers w/ 2 add'l round cakes, one on each side. I purchased a really nice topper so each of the sides will have stairs leading up to the top tier of the center cake. My FH loves my chocolate cupcakes so I am going to increase the recipe and make it for cake

definitely considered who's going to deliver it... we have thought about one of my cousins or uncles - my dad has 12 brothers and sisters. We have three years to come up w/ a solid answer. But it will get there.

Re: Making a Cake

I found a small personal cake about the size I want to give my guest at STATER BROTHERS supermarket. I set an appointment to talk to the baker to see if they cn do the cakes for me. The one I saw was 2.50 each. I f I get them as a couples cake then I will only need about 50 cakes (maximum) and I can probably get cup cakes for the kids. If things go my way then I wil only be spending like $150 for cake!

You know, this is me saying this a year before my wedding, but I don't see the big deal with making my own cake. I know better than to expect something that looks like it was done by Ace Of Cakes, but the thought of spending $500+ for a beautiful cake only to watch it get cut up just tears me up.
I'm going to practice a few recipies and will get my sister to help me out on the day. She knows how to make tiered cakes.
I'll just keep the decoration simple by only using flowers, dye, and a few piping strokes on the edges of the cakes.
I've researched on the web. It says to bake the cake four days before the wedding day, cool the cake down, then decorate as the day progress.

Alright, I've tried. It was a disaster. I've tried following the reciepe to a "T" and I tried improvisation. This damn oven doesn't bake evenly. The cake tasted okay, but I can't make it dense nor prevent it from cracking. This was while using a 9" pan. Imagine screwing around with a 14"! Not only that, but the smell of champange cake baking made me nauseous and gave me a headache after awhile. I guess we'll have to shell out the $$ for a cake. *sigh*
But you know that I had to try first. ;)

My friends and family think that I'm a great baker, but even though, I would never attempt to do my own wedding cake unless wedding cakes are my specialty. I want my cake to be perfect for my near perfect day. My cake will be costing me $800 and it's well worth it. I understand the need to save money and to scale back, but this is not the place to do it. Your wedding cake, says a strong statement on your wedding day. But then again, this was just my 2 cents worth.
