Co-workers - Invite or not invite?

Hey ladies. I have a question. Is it proper etiquette to invite co-workers? I work in a fairly small office (10/11 employees). But, after work, I can care less about what they do. I only speak to one person after work hours. However, they all know about the wedding and are expecting to attend. What do I do?

Now, if someone else was asking the question, I'd have the answer to this. lol

Re: Co-workers - Invite or not invite?

Hey Askalot, I am faced with this question as well. I personally am only inviting those individuals that I am friendly with (5 people). I do not feel obligated to invite those who I really don't care about. There were two weddings over the last six months in my office and both people only invited a select few. I was not invited to either wedding. I wasn't offended either.

My office only consists of 5 other individuals, however, none of us communicate outside of work. I'm not inviting any of them. They'll get to see the pics & receive announcements (with a wedding photo)I'm only inviting the people that I associate with off the clock. There's not enough room on my guest list...

I'm a married woman as of December 2, 2006.

Re: Co-workers - Invite or not invite?

It is only POLITE to invite them to your wedding. If they are not close to you they won't attend. Do you honestly wat to go back to work in that small place with these people feeling snubbed? If it were a large office then I would say only invite team members and your boss of course. It will create unnesseary tension if you do not give the invitations.

Re: Co-workers - Invite or not invite?

I agree with Rosetta since you work with these people everyday. I work in a small office as well, and I wish I can only invite about 3 of my coworkers but I know thats rude, so I am inviting them all. I really think only those three will show up anyway.

My only advice to you would be to do what your pockets allow! I would just say don't pick and choose which co-workers to invite. Either invite them all, or don't invite any of them. I think your boss may be an exception to that.

It is nice to be polite, and as B2B suggests do what your pockets will allow. I would like to say however, the invite all or none rule applies to those who work in a small office.

Yes, I agree Roni. I didn't make that clear. If I worked in a big company, the "all" or "none" rule would definately be "NONE" for me! LOL

Re: Co-workers - Invite or not invite?

Thank you ladies for your input and suggestions. The thing is whenever someone here has a BBQ, the whole office is invited. (I haven't done it yet). Also, for weddings, it's the same way. Two of my co-workers got married last year and they invited everyone to that too. You know what, I'll know better by the time my FINAL guest list is done. (I swear I'm on my 6th one already) One of them already said "I'll probably be the only white person there ", so I think they'd feel just a tad bit uncomfortable. But, my office is like the United Nations: 1 Indian, 1 Cuban, 2 Blacks, 3 Chinese, 2 Canadians & 2 whites. lol

Hi there!

I would say it depends on the environment of the office and your relationship with your workmates, but I would at least extend the invitation, unless you're having a very small wedding.

Have a great day!

Update...

I've made my decision, I'm going to let the office know that I would love to invite them, but I can't because my family is sooo huge and we've reached our limit. However, I will be inviting 4 of my co-workers, but they know how to shut up! lol

Just do me one favor, don't bug them with wedding details all day. I bug my male co-worker all day because he sits right next to me. I know he would be p.o.'d if he wasn't invited after he had to hear about it all the time.

Let me clarify something, I don't BUG any of my co-workers about my wedding. I bother you ladies. Also, like I said before, my personal life is kept outside of work. Also, I don't ask any of them their opinions. My co-worker that sits in my office is nosey, so she sees everything that I look at (which she is one of the 4 that's getting invited).

Dont worry about it, just invite your friends if that is what makes you happy...the last thing you would want walking up the isle is to see haters looking at you pretending they like you and talking about you - it's important that you feel supported on that day by everyone.

Charlotte wishes you all a beautiful Christmas filled with loads of love, laughter and the true meaning of this blessed season.

I know that's right! I tend to look at people that I don't care for with a frown. I need to work on that!

Re: Co-workers - Invite or not invite?

I have a similar situation. I am definitley going to extend an invitation to all my coworkers in my branch (whether I care for them or not - my office is pretty small). However, there is one lady in particular whom I can not stand and I do not want her there! It would be VERY obvious that she was the only excluded, so I decided to go ahead and invite her although I know she is not going to show up anyway. It is going to be very difficult to give her the invite, but I don't want people to look at me like I wasn't being the bigger person. Oh well...

Well ladies I have been battling the same issue. I will only invite a select few from my job. Usually when someone gets married, it is posted somewhere in their unit. When we had a bridal shower for a coworker a few weeks ago, people wanted to discuss my wedding plans. People that would hardly speak. However, in regards to me, if I were to post my annoucement people who don't care for me will show up just to be nosey. That's the type of people I am dealing with. I guess a decision can be made on a case by case basis. God bless.I
