Jumping the broom at the reception

Ladies, my FH and I have decided to jump the broom at the reception instead of the church because the officiating minister doesn't agree with it. So we don't want to step on any toes. Any, we plan on doing it right after we're introduced. 1. Has anyone seen it done this way before? 2. I was looking for a few lines that someone could say about the ritual. Last night I was watching Whose Wedding Is it Anyway? on the style network, and they happened to show a wedding where the couple jumped the broom. Here's what was said right before: It is believed that during the era of slavery in America, newly wed couples would use the ritual of broom jumping as the way to get legitimacy of their union since they were unable to wed under legal circumstances. We want everyone to get up on your feet and make a joyful noise so the rocks don

Re: Jumping the broom at the reception

I have never seen it done before but I think it would be cool to do it at the reception. It's deffinately different and all your guest will remember it.Come to think of it out of all the wedddings I've been to I have never seen the couple "jump the broom". I saw that episode too that when the black lady with the limp was the coordinator(I cant remember her name at the moment). I think to can search google or something for other readings.

I am so sorry to hear that the officiant wont let you do it in the church after the ceremony, I have never heard of such. Any how, I jumped the broom at my first wedding and that speach is fine. I too have never seen it done at the reception.

Re: Jumping the broom at the reception

I think jumping the broom at the reception is a wonderful idea. It is very unique and I have never seen it done before. Great way to set your wedding apart from everyone else. Here are a few lines that I found on various websites and just modified them and combined them. Use all or part of it, its your ceremony:

The jumping of the broom is a symbol of sweeping away of the old and welcoming the new, a symbol of a new beginning. During slavery, our ancestors sought the legitimacy of marriage by jumping over the broom. For our ancestors, this small ritual was a legal and bonding act connecting them with the heritage of their homeland and gave legitimacy, dignity and strength to their union. It is said that the spray of the broom represents all of us scattered and the handle represents the almighty who holds us together. Today Mr and Mrs. SuchandBlah have chosen to honor their ancestors by jumping the broom.

I timed out just this portion and it was 35 seconds long when I said it out loud.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride; so I love you because I know no other way. ~ Pablo Neruda

I saw that episode too with that lady...man she puts together some awesome receptions and ceremonies with her innovative and cute ideas...I think she's in Baltimore....anyhoo...I agree that doing it at the reception is a good idea...and I think its very cool of you to consider your officiant's wishes on not doing this at the ceremony...Its not hurting anyone to do it at the reception and it would be a great way to get the reception/party started! I would do the same thing girlfriend if my Pastor said no too.
