Chicago Area Newbie

Hi Ladies! I decided to be more than a lurker around here. I am getting married this fall, no date set as of yet due to my FH work schedule requiring lots of travel. We know it will be no later than November. I am looking forward to learning more from all of you. This will be the first marriage for FH and myself so we are both clueless on the planning aspect.

Before november? you'll be amazed at what can come together in such a short amount of time, what type of ceremony are you looking for?

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride; so I love you because I know no other way. ~ Pablo Neruda

Welcome Mynia! Love Chi-town in the Spring-Summer months (you have to drag me off the Mag-Mile). Can't deal with the Winter there girl. I used to be in Chicago every week with my job. Securing a location must be hard without a date, but you can always start buying the little things. Have you chosen colors or a theme?

Re: Chicago Area Newbie

Hi there -- welcome to the boards! It's nice to see a sistah from home up in here. I was born and raised in Chicago and my family still lives there.

If you are getting married this fall, you need to set a date and seek a venue ASAP -- in Chi, they don't play; many places are booked MONTHS in advance. If you are getting married in a church, you will have to get that set up ASAP as well, because many of the churches require fees, and possible membership and premarital counseling before you can be married there.

Don't worry, sis -- you are in the right place. The sistahs here are knowledgeable and can answer just about any questions you have!

Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials and again welcome!

Have a great day!

Re: Chicago Area Newbie

I wish I could set a date right now but we can't. My FH currently lives in Nigeria and between his work schedule and getting the immigration paperwork done I am unable to set a date. I won't set a date until he is here with me because so many other people have a hand in our date setting criteria.

I am planning to do a punch and cake reception as our funds are very tight. I also come from a HUGE family (49 first cousins on my mother's side alone) and do not want to incur the expense of that size dinner reception. As far as my dress, he is going to get it made in Nigeria along with his suit. That is the plan so far but I still plan to look at dresses with my neighbor.

I am really excited and happy to have found this site. I have even told my neighbor who is planning a wedding also.

Welcome to the sistahood Mynia! Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. I will piggyback on what some of the other sisters have said. You will need to secure a location for your ceremony and reception. Things are booked well in advance. You will need to decide on colors and you may want to start buying little things, i.e. unity candles, favors, etc. Again welcome my sister.

Hey Mynia, welcome to the boards and thank u for bringing some Midwest flavor, I just love Chicago!!
Like many of the ladies already suggested, it may be hard to plan for a Nov wedding w/out an exact date so do as many of the smaller tasks as possible esp. since I know how exhausting the immigration process can be so please stay encouraged.

Re: Chicago Area Newbie

When he gets back to Nigeria he will pick the fabric and colors for our attire so from there I will begin going to Hobby Lobby and pulling the simple things together like flowers, table coverings, etc. I am going to price a cake and put down a deposit, look at locations and make a top 5 list. I want something very simple and short. If I wasn't the only child I would have probably just got a minister and got married in my parents living room. Mostly because of the cost of a wedding and I will be the sole financial provider in the house until he gets a work permit. I have 3 children, he has 1. We have to move so I am keeping all this in mind when spending out funds.

I have accepted that much of it is out of my hands so what I can do, I will do.
