Your First Dress

My FH and I are in a long-distance relationship so our wedding plans are kind of backwards and inside out. We've set the dates (one here, one there) for June and November of 2008 but i have no ring yet because he wants it to be a surprise. He'll be here in November and I'll be there in March, for our anniversary and to meet his family so i know it will be one of these visits. Even though many things about our relationship speak to a worldwind love affair, i'm quite the traditionalist in my heart. I don't want to set foot in a bridal shop until i'm wearing my engagement ring. Still, searching the web for dresses and seeing all of the pics of the vibride queens makes me itch to get into a dress. I think i'll probably burst into tears in the store when i do go. In my mind, i imagine this to be a touching occasion for any bride to be. So tell me ladies . . . what was it like when u tried on your FIRST DRESS?

Re: Your First Dress

Musikana,

Don't worry about the ring, it will come in time. I haven't receive my ring just yet and my date is June 2007. I know my fh truly loves me. So not having the ring hasn't bothered me, because I know it's coming. When I tried on my first dress I immediately began to smile and couldn't stop. It was the best feeling. It made me realize that my day was getting closer being with the one I truly love.

Re: Your First Dress

Hi Musikana! Your ring will come in time. My fiance and I were engaged twice so while engagement rings are wonderful, it's the wedding band that truly counts! Ok, back to your question. When I first went to try on my dress I went to Phenomonique's bridal store Phenomenal Affairs (one of our vi-bride sisters) with an idea of what I wanted. I had taken my daughter, my neice and my Maid of Honor with me. I tried on a few dresses and they were all beautiful. When I tried on the last dress a Maggie Sottero, when I came out the dressing room my neice, daughter and MOH all said that's it! I turned around and looked at myself in the mirror and I was so pleased! You will know the right dress once you put it on.

Re: Your First Dress

Musikana I felt OKAY in my first dress. I was very nervous and not very eager to take this first step because its on of the first things you do to know that you really are getting married, and soon! It took a few tries but I finally found the one I like and I will be ordering it from Phenominal Affairs. Sometimes when you see it on someone else you think it isn't your "type", but I will say take a friend or two, and try on as many as possible because the one I finally fell in love with was one I hated when I saw it in the magazine....All the many dresses I did want to wear from the magazines and the mannequins ended up looking terrible on me, so be flexible and ready to try stuff on. I know you have 2 years but its not too early either. I think Cinny bought hers a year and a half ago, and she's getting married in December.

Re: Your First Dress

Thanks Bumble! You brought up a good point. I've been calling around to see who has these specific Maggie Sottero gowns (i love 'em Rhony)that i saw on the website but now i'm gonna cast my net a little wider and try on more styles. I may love something that i'd previously turned up my nose at.

As far as the ring goes . . . i know its coming and the little girl in me is being impatient. What's got me fidgety is that i know if he were living here, i'd already have my romantic proposal. the almost-grown part of me (my momma said you're not grown till you're 30, i'm 25) knows that good things come to those who wait. He had me email him my top ten choices with price quotes 2 months ago so at this point, Patience really is a virtue.

Ring, swing. My ring was on layway at Walmart and I wear it proudly cuz that is what he could afford to give me. Everyone laughed when I told them where it was coming from until I popped up with a pretty princess cut yellow gold ring! We have years to buy pretty fancy rings. He wants a titanium band. NO compliants here!

DOn't worry about what others say! You got the ring don't ya? Then thats it! Musikana, girlfriend patience IS a virtue.....BUt remember, its most likely still going to catch you off guard so this is just a warning. Once the ring comes, then the real deal begins. Enjoy your stress-free moments my darling! You will forget what stress-free is all about once you get well into the planning! Being knee-deep in it myself, I am not complaining, just sharing and warning you! Be ready...be patient....stay positive!

When I went to David's Bridal to try on wedding dresses I felt like a princess I had gotten my hair done and tryied on several dresses and took a lot of pictures to help me with my decision. The bridal consultanrs help you out if you 3 to 30 dress choices they are your personal dress consultant it was wonderful

Re: Your First Dress

When I went to try on dresses for the 1st time it was kind of surreal! I had scheduled an appt with David's Bridal a month before and when the date came I was sick with a cold. Needless, to say I went to the appt anyway because my grandmom, mother and mother in-law was soo looking forward to it. I can honestly say that when I tried on the 1st dress and loooked in the mirror I instantly felt better. I was in tears because I realized that my dream to get married was coming true. My mother had a glow in her eyes too! As for your ring, like the other ladies said it will come be patient. Besides, it's about the love that you both have for each other not the ring. Don't get caught up in the material thing and lose sight of what marriage means. Congrats

Great observation Purebliss! So many women get caught up in the ring and the wedding, that they forget you are somebody's WIFE afterward. For Better or worse till death do you part.

Re: Your First Dress

When I tried on my first dress, it felt unreal. When I looked at myself in the mirror, wearing a wedding dress, it finally hit me that I was getting married FOR REAL. I was giddy, happy, and nervous.(about picking a dress) Even though I knew what I wanted, I still tried on two others that I liked (just to see how they looked on me). I initially saw my dream dress in a December 2004 magazine, got engaged May 2005 (about six months later) and Phenomonique found the dress for me, and I bought it from her in January 2006. So i've had my dress for about eight months now & have less than threee more months until I wear it.

I'm a married woman as of December 2, 2006.

Re: Your First Dress

Hello....let me just TELL you how it was for me gurl! This was the FIRST bridal shop I went into.....the lady was helping me and pulling dresses down left and right for me to try on when i saw it!!! This other young lady had it on.....I immediately pulled my consultant to me by her hair and said....I WANT THAT ONE!! lol...okay maybe I didn't pull her over by her hair.....but IT IS GORGEOUS!...It is a sweetheart neckline.....and mermaid fit with this lacework on the bottom and the train....OH MY GOODNESS GRIEF....when I put it on...I didn't want to take it off....and couldn't stop looking at myself!....I've heard people say that this happened to them...but I didn't even imagine that is was really real.....but I actually got warm inside when I put the dress on!.....

Re: Your First Dress

That's exactly how I felt when I tried on my wedding dress. I have always been the type of person how try's to think outside the box and be diffrent. So when I was looking for wedding dresses I already know I wanted to go with a nontraditional dress. When I saw the dress I thought it was nice. I asked my consultant how would I know which dress would be the right one, and she told that when I tried it on I would know. And she was right.

Re: Your First Dress

It will DEFINATELY be like that for you! I didn't really believe it either until it happened to me. I even tried going to other bridal shops to look at other dresses (I found it in the first shop I visited), but each dress I tried on I compared them to the "the dress". After the third shop I stopped trying to fool myself and went right back and put a deposit on it....

I SOOO wish I could, I found out it is some type of exclusive something or other and there are no pictures of that exact dress anywhere online.....Musikana posted some pictures of a couple possible dresses on another post that are a similiar style to mine. I WISH I could find it somewhere....
