IS ANYONE FROM THE DC OR MARYLAND AREAS? IM TRYING TO FIND GOOD CARIBBEAN CATERERS, MY FAMILY IS FROM PANAMA AND MY FH IS HAITIAN, SO I WANT TO INCLUDE CARIBBEAN CUISINE FOR THE RECEPTION. ALSO I WAS THINKING ABOUT HIRING FOLKLORIC HAITIAN & PANAMANIAN DANCERS TO ENTERTAIN MY GUEST DURING THE RECEPTION. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I lived in DC for awhile, my mom is still there ( Iwas just up there this past weekend).
But I know there is a small place on Georgia Ave NW, DC. It's up past the CVS (past Emerson) but before the (newer) Safeway (not the Safeway by GA Ave. Metro station). (I am starting at Emerson and going into Silver Spring with my directions.) I forget the exact street.
There is also a place down by Howard, it's on Georgia Ave too. I haven't eaten at any of these places so I don't know what the food tastes like, but my MOH (who lives in the DC Metro area) swears the food by Howard is good.
Hope this helps a little. If my directions are confusing let me know.
THANKS FOR THE INFO SUPER DIVA//MAYBE I WILL JUST DRIVE UP AND DOWN GEORGIA AVE FROM SILVER SPRING AND LOOK OUT FOR THOSE SPOTS
Umm Umm Umm I love Carribbean food!

No problem. The one by Howard is right by the campus. They are small places so you may not be able to spot them out easily.
I love the food too. Especially beef patties and coco bread!
When I was down at Howard, there were two GREAT caribbean restaurants. One was back by the U-street/Cardozo Metro stop that was a bit pricy but was really worth the walk. They catered one of our CSA (Caribbean Students Association) parties one time and the food disappeared. I'll try to find the name for you.
There's also one about two blocks from Georgia Ave up near campus that's smaller but is family owned. They have funky hours though, so you have to know that they are open to go over.

Actually I just remembered another place in Hyattsville, MD off of Queens Chapel Road (a.k.a. Michigan Ave when you cross into DC) that just opened right before I graduated. The food was so good it made you want to cry. I'll call my old roommate and get that name for you.

The food is soooo good. It's between Caribbean and West African catering for our buffet, either way a corset will be my savior at the reception.

I was actually born and raised in CA but I spent alot of time in subsaharan Africa before i met FH who is Zimbabwean. I grew up in African culture and people always think I was born there but i wasn't. I'm going to Zimbabwe for the first time this March. I love Ghanaian and Senegalese food best! Yum Yum Probably bcuz they use alot of sweet fruits and fish. Caribbean food just seems like a good midpont for our cultures especially when you think about the Middle Passage and all that.
That's probably more than you wanted to know . . .

Okay...that's interesting...I was born in NY, stayed there for about 2 seconds and went to live with my grandmother in Monrovia Liberia for several years, I've been here in Charlotte since then. Alot of my family has been back home several times since then, our parents at one time even considered going back, but THANK GOD they didn't becuase of the civil war that has ravaged that country for 20 yrs.......and that's probably more than YOU wanted to know...lol...anyway, I love Carribbean food, Liberian, I've tasted food from nigeria and ghana.....each country has a slightly different way of cooking their food it seems...
Lunch time needs to hurry up.... Ya'll are making me hungry!
I can't believe I missed this topic!I'm going to do a little research to find some Caribbean and Africa recipes. Can anyone recommend good websites for this?
Born Blessed!
Bump!

Did anyone actually find any caribbean food websites? We're having a Caribbean theme and we're having to teach the caterers (they won't let us get our own - shame!) what to cook!!
any ideas what would be good both for sit down meal and evening buffet (beef patties sound good right about now....)
