The big Vs.

Hi all, I see people saying this all over the board, but I didn't see a particular thread address the issue. So I was wondering, is it really better to go for a more expensive venue, where they do all the work, and save the headache Vs. a cheaper place, and then spend money on decorations ect, and do it yourself?
I'm trying to go cheap, but I want somthing nice. It just seems real hard to figure the full cost of do-it-yourself... any sugguestions?? thanks
oh side question, who does all that work if you don't go to a hotel, ex: hostess, clean up, MC.

Re: The big Vs.

Each person is different. You have to weigh the pros vs the cons for your individual likings/finances. In my experience, I have found that although renting a hall is cheaper, once everything gets added, it really isn't that much of a difference. It also depends on the types of venues you choose and what it is that you want.

Personally, I chose my venue because I didn't want to have to depend on people having to do work before/after the reception. But, mainly, I wanted to have my wedding/reception at a banquet hall. But, it's all up to the individual.

Some places will charge you a small fee if their employees have to clean up. Other places, you don't have a choice - you're responsible for decorations, food, clean up, etc.

What is it that you really want to do?

Um, well in the area that I live all I have found are Hotels (low and high end), recreation/community centers, in a park setting, or historical houses. The difference in money seems to depend on the area/city... If I could choice I would love the eassy package at a hotel... but I guess I'm still thinking it thru in my head.. lol thanks for the input

Welcome to the site and Sept bride is right it depends on what you are looking for. I think it's better to go somewhere that does most of the work and find other ways to save money like doing your own flowers or centerpieces etc. I think restaurants are generally the cheapest without all the extra work. There will be enough to worry about without having to do all the little yet important things. I've had several friends who went to a cheaper venue where you had to do it yourself with disasterous results. You have to be a highly organized person to pull that off. Keep us posted with your decision and Good luck

I agree with the ladies. Do your research, but remember that whoever you go with , even if its inexpensive, make sure they are going to clean-up the place. If they say that their price does not include the clean-up, but its enexpensive, pay the extra to have them take care of it. We don't want any disasters or headaches. Remember to do only whats in the budget, AND remember that you have to live the day after. My FH is moving in with me, and we were furniture shopping last week and I was like dag! We're paying for the wedding ourselves and making a home so don't stretch it too too much.

Re: The big Vs.

When picking a venue I looked for a place where I didnt have to worry about cleaning up and decorationg before the event or after, or asking anyone else to do it. I figured that we would all be busy doing other things and the less we have to worry about the better.

I think it all depends on how much work YOU (because...it'll come down to you for the most part) want to put in. Know that if you choose a do-it-your-self venue...you WILL be doing it yourself. Can you deal? if so then save your $ and go that route.
