Re: Name change necesstie

How was it!!!!!!! I really don't know the time limit but I would do it as soon as possible because when I got married I waited around and it was close to income tax time when I did change my name, and it was such a big mess when we tried to file our taxes. So I would do that as soon as possible. If memory serves me correct, I think that I just went to the Social Security Office and changed my name from there starting with my social security card. Once your name is changed on your ss card then you should have no problem with anything else. Good Luck!

Congratulations !!!

You can change your name when ever you want, there is no time limit to do this. Tdankel is correct, the first step is changing it with social security. It's not official until you change it there. When you go to DMV to change your driver license over, be prepared to surrender your old license. This may cause some banking problems so make sure you plan accordingly.

Ditto as far as starting at the SS office. I will surrender my DL but keep my state ID just in case I forget something. Here's a list for you:

SS (here's the form you'll need http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf)
IRS (This may be automatic once the SS office documents the change)
DMV
Voter Registration
Employer
Banks
Credit Cards
Insurance (car, house, life, etc.)
Investments (stock portfolios, et)
Doctor/Dentist
Utilities (light, phone, cell, gas, etc)
AND NOW THAT YOU'RE BACK FROM JA: Passport

Get an extra copy of your certified marriage certificate to carry around with you.

HTH!

Re: Name change necesstie

Definitely don't wait like the girls said.....Because I changed my name right after the wedding in early March, we still filed separately in April (good timing) because it was easier. It was also easier for me because I live in my state's capital so my SS and DL was changed easily about 10 days after the wedding.....For taxes, All I had to do was put my new name on the form, and then where it asks if your name was different in the previous year, you just put your maiden name....I've been having to do that a lot since I am about to graduate and have been applying for jobs...

Did anyone else file jointly or separately once they were married? Is it easier to file jointly or separately the very first time after marriage? We were real close to tax time, and everything got changed quick so we did it separately....

Re: Name change necesstie

Makes so much sense!....It seems to be just a little easier to file seperately in that first year together rather than jointly.

I think Askalot just provided another useful tip!
