Addressing Invitations

Ladies we need a new subject so hears one! I've read where it's proper etiquette to give your invitations a personal touch by handwriting the addresses on the envelopes. I've seen people do it but I would really prefer to run the envelopes through the printer or do clear labels. I don't really think that my handwriting is all that great. And plus I will have rsvp envelope enclosed with stamp with return address, so that will be alot of writing. The only thing about my situation is that I wonder if gold ink would show up on clear labels or should I just print in gold ink on the envelopes.

Hey PB&J I will be doing clear labels for my invitations. All of that handwriting would be too much for me -- LOL!! As far as gold ink for your invitations, I would just do the gold ink on the invitations only. It may not show up or get smudged on the labels. In any event do a test run and see what you think.

I think the gold would show up nicely. Can you do a sample one first before you commit to the total number of invites?

Re: Addressing Invitations

I will be going the way of labels... my handwriting is not great, or let my mom write each one out. My mom has the most gorgeous handwriting in the world, it looks like calligraphy. I have tried to copy my signature like she does hers and I fail miserably every time. If she gets a hand cramp though it will be all about those labels b/c ya girl is not writing anything. The MOST personal we will probably get are personalized mapquest directions from the individuals home. inside of the invite.

I will definately be doing labels. It's not that my handwriting is bad. It just looks better to me. Besides, it would be waaaaaaay too many envelopes to address IMO.

Re: Addressing Invitations

I brought this up because my wedding planner informed me today that the invites were completed and I will be picking them up on Wednesday. Since my reception venue requires a number of guests guarantee 30 days in advance, I will have to send out my invitations around 1st or 2nd week of August to get with a deadline of Aug 31st. this will give me a few days for stragglers. I will let the venue know on September 7th. Time is really winding down.

I can remember when I had 8 months to go and you had 9 and it seemed like just yesterday! Time is really flying. My brother gets married on 8/26 so after that I have 41 days left. That's what I've been using to gauge how close we are to the date.

I think I will be using labels too. I thought about writing tem but after a while the writing will change. People always talk about the way I write becaue it changes with my mood. I can stat off writing pretty but if someone makes me mad the thats it, it goes into italics and half cursive and everything else. Since FH is left handed and his writing looks like taggers writing so he's deffinately out. My mom has really nice writing but I doubt she will want that task...lol

You know, ladies, I am really torn about this one because I guess I am so dang cheap!!! I am thinking handwriting is free!! Me likes free. But I think after about 50 of these things I will get carpal tunnel. The labels may be the way to go!!!

Have a great day!

Okay ladies,

I hate to be a wet blanket but if you really care about wedding do's and don'ts the clear labels are a definite no no. Running the envelopes through the computer is better. Is there someone that you know who loves to write and has good penmanship? If so, you can ask them. Just a suggestion.

Re: Addressing Invitations

I used clear labels for my invites, and printed them in gray ink to match the ink color on the invitation. I do have nice handwriting though, but I didn't want to make a mistake and have to start over with a new envelope. At least you can pull off a label that's incorrect. I did handwrite the names on the inner envelope though.

I am actually torn between this too. I do have nice handwriting, but we are talking about a lot of envelopes. Personally, mine doesn't have to be too fancy at all...I think I will look for a nice calligraphy pen, and do a couple of samples for my MOH and matron of honor to copy, and enlist their help. My mom has some beautiful handwriting too, so I think I may let her do the ones for her family since she has all their info. Same goes for my FH and his very elegant penmanship.
...I am not really convinced about the labels because I like the personal touch of handwriting....but if the times get tough, I will not hesitate to use the clear labels, and just pick a nice cursive font in Microsoft Word for them! Its all about whatever I can do for the least amount of money and time!

Re: Addressing Invitations

I talked to my mom about doing the invitations and she said she would. This came as a big suprise to me because I had already said she wouldn't. She told me if I give them to her at least 2 weeks in advance she can do a little at a time, that way she dont get tired and her writing wont get messy. I am so loving this becasue I was really set on getting the labels.

Now a new question is can I use the labels on the response cards or should I also had write those too?

Re: Addressing Invitations

My FH and I were JUST discussing this but before I started a new board, I searched and found this one from July. We are debating using clear labels or having all of the aunts get together and handwrite the addresses on the invitations. Our response envelopes already have our address preprinted on them.

PB&J, Rhony, Bumble, Askalot, Alvinslove, what did you all wind up doing? Did you wind up using the labels or handwriting them?

Does anyone have a final answer on the etiquette of using labels on invitations?

Re: Addressing Invitations

After all that talk, i ended up running them through my printer, and they came out very nice. I was even impressed. I did white labels too, and it didn't take away from the cleanness, and precision of the entire envelope. We printed my mailing address directly on the envelope and did white labels for the mailing addresses and for my address label to go on all the RSVP cards. I was just truly impressed.

I recieved some invites by hand and if they are not calligraphy by a professional, they do not compare. Someone even used a calligraphy pen and I could tell they were not a professional and it ended up looking like regualar handwriting. We used "monotype cursiva" font and like I said, it just clean, uniform, and elegant.

If you do any writing, then do it all the way, not 1/2 labels AND writing. Plus do writing samples or hire someone cause the effect won't be the same otherwise.

Another friend of mine used a red calligraphy pen for her Dec 05 wedding, and it came out beautifully, but it took her approximately 1 month to write them all and this is devoting over 4-6 hrs a day and with a friend! She enjoyed the results, but felt she could have used those hours doing other things. So also weigh the options:)

I have a feeling that we may wind up paying a calligrapher to address our invitations. We have been discussing the options and it seems like labels are frowned upon for most people.

Rhony, we will hand write the invitations. The extra cost for a calligrapher can go towards our house and furniture. House prices are expensive!

Re: Addressing Invitations

So how many of you are handwriting the addresses on the envelopes of your invitations? I hear this is proper etiquette, but my handwriting is not great at all, and with me being in school, I just really don't have time to do it. Of course I would enlist the help of my FMIL, but none of my family lives anywhere near this area. I considered paying a calligrapher, but then I figured that money could go toward something more important, considering the envelopes are going to end up in the trash can anyway! I am considering doing clear labels using a fancy font from Photoshop. So what is everyone else planning to do, or if you've already done it, what did you do? Thanks!

I thought about doing the calligraphy myself, however, I also thought about the time i would save printing labels. so I am opting to do labels with a really nice font. If any of you have MS office 2007, word and Publisher have really nice fonts. they acutally have a calligraphy syle font.

On the topic of invitation etiquette. Is it proper to hand deliver invitations or Save the Dates to save some costs on postage. For example all the members of my church my parents will see, do I still need to mail the invitatations or save the dates?

Ivy, it is more than proper to hand deliver invitations to your church members and your close friends. Now, with friends of the family on either side, you must mail those. I'm sorry to say. So think nothing of it.

I'm just trying to mail as few as possible. That saves me a large chunk of postage actually. That saves me from mailing about 90 invitations.
