African American/Mexican Wedding

Hello everyone. I am new to this board. I'm was very excited to see that there is a resource thread for us Sistahs. I'm so tired of picking up every bridal magazine and not seeing any of US on the cover. I can't remember the last time I saw a Sistah on the cover of Brides, Inside Weddings, etc. I enjoy my Brides Noir but it's only published twice a year. Sorry, had to vent.

I am posting this message to gather some ideas to incorporate into my wedding. My fiance is 1st gen Mexican and I am black so I really want to mix it up. There are a lot of Mexican wedding traditions out there, but I'm finding it hard to locate traditions from my own heritage outside of Jumping the Broom.

I would appreciate any idea or suggestions. Thanks ladies!

Actually Duchessv, I just thought of another thing. Since your FH is Mexican, maybe you could scout around for an All-Female Mariachi band, that'll be willing to come and play at your reception for an hour or so. I'm sure he and his family would greatly appreciate the thought and gesture.

Welcome Duchessv. Google Yoruba Tasting Ceremony for another African tradition besides jumping the broom. I think you should limit the number of traditions you try to incorporate into your ceremony. Maybe two African American traditions and two Mexican traditions.

Re: African American/Mexican Wedding

Welcome duchessv!

You can mix in both traditions beautifully also by

1. color and clothing choice:

Many non-western influenced african weddings tend to use a lot of white and gold, whereas Mexican traditions are rich in colors. I would talk to his family, look at their wedding pictures and look for details that could be pretty. I know that I LOVE the whole flower in the hair detail for the bridesmaids. Many Mexican wedding dresses are also white, and the veil is usually very detailed and pretty...you could incorperate that also.

2. Ceremony traditions:

Of course the whole broom-jumping is one detail, you can also incorperate traditional Mexican Wedding details-which are usually Catholic or Roman Catholic- with communion and/or Unity Candles(which we do a lot in African-American/western weddings). If you know what part of Africa your family hails from, you can incorperate those wedding traditions which are very rich....many include a dowry or lobola, or some pre-wedding day traditions including family members like a dinner for example....

As far as Mexican-American Traditions go, you still need to talk to the FEMALES in his family....they-like all females- will be very very familiar to the traditions, and can lead you in the right direction for getting your hands on any material (if they don't have it already), you need for clothing, or other little details. Also, use this time to get closer to his family members-which tend to be matriarchal- and maybe they will loan you something...which is a beautiful way to bond both your families.

Food Choices....

This can be very difficult, but it doesn't HAVE to be because the choices are limitless. Take time to study both cuisines....Look and see what your family is more likely to eat, and what his family would be comfortable eating. If you do a buffet, have 2 or 3 meat choices that both will likely eat. Talk to his family on that too because what they eat everyday may be different from what they eat on special occasions....If it can be allowed, a family member of his may be able to make some light hors d'ouvers (spelling?) to include before the reception starts.

Music:

Definitely include both. My brother's wife is from Africa, and we had so much fun dancing to many traditional african-music tunes that were very upbeat, and fun. The beautiful thing about Mexican tradition is that many of their songs are beautiful for couples to dance to. Imagine you and your new husband dancing to a traditional song-you may want to get Salsa Lessons, or Ballroom dancing lessons for one slow song, and one upbeat salsa or tango lesson song. That would be a hit! Think Dancing with the Stars! If your family is free-spirited like mine, they will jump at the opportunity to have some fun! Oh yes....and see if you can hire a Mariachi Band for a few numbers. They could come in the beginning or end. I love mariachis and I think a good one will be worth your time and $$!

Good luck, and Thank God for this unique opportunity. It sounds like you are in for a lot of fun!
Happy Planning:)

Re: African American/Mexican Wedding

Thank for all your advice ladies. It was very helpful. I think one of you ladies were right in being careful not to overdue it. I think we are going to limit the ceremony to one tradition each, the broom and the lasso. Then we are going to incorporate our heritage though our floral, decor and the hors d'vourers. The great thing about this is that it allows us to be creative and do some DIY projects which will be a great bonding experience with both of our families. All of your comments were helpful and appreciated. I think we are going to go with Yellow & Orange for colors, very summerish since my wedding will be in July. We are stll figuring out the details, but I will definately keep everyone updated on the details as they come along.

Thanks everyone!
