AFRICAN THEMED WEDDING FIRST DANCE--HELP!!!

My fiance' and I are incorporating African tradition in our wedding ceremony that will be held in Jamaica. We don't want to do the traditional first dance that typical European wedding ceremonies have. What can we do in place of the traditional first dance? We were thinking of me (the bride) doing an african dance while my fiance' plays the Djembe (drum). Has anyone ever heard of this before? Are there specific dances that should be done? What is a traditional order of ceremony/celebration for African weddings?

Help!!!!

Thanks.

Re: AFRICAN THEMED WEDDING FIRST DANCE--HELP!!!

Welcome blackqueen and congrats on your upcoming wedding. Me and my DH danced to a more upbeat song instead of a "slow song", and it took everyone by surprise, but was a hit despite my DJ's and some other friends' concerns over how it would go over....

I would definitely look for an African dance teacher or school near you. For a fee you can either join the class to learn some moves so you can create a routine, or you can get the teacher to teach you a routine privately/like private lessons. I think this would be great! Many couples are choosing to incorperate cultural themes in their first dance too. I recently suggested one girl do a tango with her Mexican-American FH for their first dance, so you and your FH are right inside the trend too! I think with planning, your first dance and your new DH playing the drum will turn out beautifully, and will surprise your guests!

Good luck in your search and happy planning. Please keep us up to date:)
