I'm an accounting student, and boy these classes are whipping my butt! I'm starting to wonder if I'm taking the classes I really wanted to go to school for?
I'm an accounting student, and boy these classes are whipping my butt! I'm starting to wonder if I'm taking the classes I really wanted to go to school for?
Nope, just graduated in August with my Masters (Praise God). I think that you should explore the career opportunities in accounting, and ask yourself if your degree would really be useful in your career....If so, then the classes are worth it...plus most majors have a few butt-kicking classes-also known as the weeding-out classes....but if its worth it, go forth...If you are not planning to be an accountant per se, and your career doesn't need that type of degree, you may consider something related...However, if you would have an edge with an accounting degree, then its definitely worth it...
In my field you just need a BS in Nutrition, but having an internship with the RD (registered dietician credential) along with a BS gives those people an edge as far as finding jobs.... Having all that, and a Masters specializing in Nutrition and Food or Business, or Management or something gives you more money, and more mobility...Making moving up better....so I said all that to say that yes, you may take some seemingly unnecessary classes...these classes are designed to weed out those who can't handle it, and hopefully weed out those not willing to put in extra work to stick it out....I used to teach a class like that to undergrads.....
Then see what type of degrees, experience/internships and credentials are needed for people who go FAR in your career. Truth be told in some careers certain degrees w/o experience and extra credentials can limit you by making you compete with others with the same or similar degree and extra credentials....Sorry I am so long-winded, but I used to counsel pre-med high school students when I used to be pre-med in college....So i know the thought process....
Thank you soooooooooooo much for all your "long-windedness" ....:)
I was a bookkeeper for years ...and absolutely loved it! Now I want to be a CPA ..eventually way eventually ...working from home for other businesses ....
You are absolutely right about the "weed out" classes ...cause I was ready to through the towel in when I was taking them dogg-on science classes, religion classes, etc ...For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what that had to do with NUMBERS!
Thanks Bumble ...I feel like I can finish my homework now ...I was taking a break ...:)
I have an Associates Degree in Business Management and a Bachelors Degree in Economics. I plan to go back to school to get my Masters in Human Resources Management in the near future.
Delight yourself in The Lord & He will give you the desires of your heart!Ps 37

Whooo whee! You go girl....ya'll are a very edu-ma-cated bunch:)
ya'll are also an inspiring group of EDUCATED WOMEN!
I received dual BS degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1999, plus a Math minor. After i finished I used the math minor to work with kids developing programs to raise their scores on standardized tests and was a certified financial planner. I decided if I was going to JAIL for killing a kid it would be my OWN! So I tried to get into engineering. This is when I found out having a 2-1/2 year break from the field didn't work! I went back to school and got a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology and joined my current company where I've held 3 different positions in 3-1/2 years.
I want to go back and get my MS in Engineering Management but have to stack some paper first! Then again I always find myself doing the financial planning and debt reduction on the side so maybe that's my calling!
You are soooooooo right Bumble, this group of ladies is awesome, edu- ma-cated and inspiring as well!!!! LOL!!! I am so glad to be a part of this talented group of woman that make up this wonderful sista hood!
Delight yourself in The Lord & He will give you the desires of your heart!Ps 37
I have my Bachelors in Business Administration, Human Resources Management concentration. I am currently enrolled in distance learning classes to become a certified event planner. Hopefully I'll be completed with this before Spring so that I can enroll next fall in a dual Master's/PhD program for Organizational Communications. I want to be the first in my family to have a doctoral degree.
"I'm a work in progress, God is not through me yet"
I plan to start taking online courses to study Christian Counseling. I want to be able to minister to abused women, inmates, and ex-offenders. Also, I want offer referrals for housing assistance, drug counseling, and job placement assistance.
I have my bachelors in Computer Science but in my line of work you have to stay current with the world...needless to say, I am looonnng overdo for some enhancement classes... :( I take a course about once a year that keeps me "informed" but not as "skilled" as I should be
I graduated with my Masters of Science in Clinical Psychology in May 2006 (Hallelujah!) and i got my BA in Psychology. I miss the learning but i don't miss the studying.
I have a BTech in Public Relations as well as an Honours Degree in Organisational Communications. I also have a Post Graduate Degree in Business Management. For the future, I would like to enrol for a Masters in Communications specialising in CSI (Corporate Social Investment)... I think big corporates could definitely do more than what they are currently doing in terms of investing in the communities from which they are operating hence my desire to venture into CSI.
I received my B.A. in Film/Video Studies, and I am currently working on my Masters degree in Architecture. I understand how you are feeling Turiya. I struggled for a very long time about what career I wanted to pursue, and I still continue to struggle with it to this day. I will be finished with my program this coming spring, but with an architecture degree, there are several directions I can go in. So I may start out working in an architecture firm, but I definitely know that is not what I want to do for my entire design career.

My DH has is BS in Computer Information Sciences from FAMU....You are right it takes much to stay in touch...He is already studying to get all those A++, MSCE or whatever certifications, and he is always reading and working on programs, websites (for a little extra cash), and conputer language books (he learned all that PHP, MySQL or whatever) to keep abreast.....
I feel very proud to know such accomplished black women!! So much about the theory black men are intimidated by black women who make waves... I am a law student now and will graduate next Summer (halleluja) I also have my BA in Political Science from New York- the FH is actually putting me through law school hmmm

I understand...I have taken the A+ certification classes (3) for hardware, software and servers but I really need to go back into the classroom and take some more courses (I am not disciplined enough to do the on-line courses!) :o
I know exactly what you mean. I have my bachelors degree in accounting and I was working on my MBA but the tution was kicking my butt left and right. Anway if you want to remain in the accounting field having your degree or CPA license sets you apart from others. I am living experience that certain employers respect that and pay you more for your dedication. I was proud of myself because I was the first and only one in my family to go to college and graduate..etc.Just make sure accounting is what you want to do and go for it. I am actually going for a career change I want to be a wedding/event planner and start up my own business within in the next year or so and I will also do some bookkeeping on the side.
It's wonderful 2 see all of the successful, women on this board.I am also a student studying Finance with an emphasis in Investments... I enjoy school but Lord knows I will be sooo happy when May 10th comes and I am finally finished with my BS... I already have my own company (JTrades & Co.) that I have been using for the past 2 years to do taxes for family & friends and once I graduate I will be able to work as a financial analyst & stock broker... I will still have to do more schooling to sit for several Series exams but atleast I'll have the major part of school done...

I am actually getting ready to go back (hopefully, I just sent in my application)
To get my certification in K-6 education
I already have a master's degree in training and development but my heart tells me I really need to be in the classroom, so I'm going for it.
Ya'll pray for me cuz I'm going back full time.
Real love requires a minimum of emotion and a maximum of the will - Bishop Keith W. Reed, Sr.
I'm already praying! .. I'm in full time, work full time, 3 kids (at home) 3 dogs, and planning a wedding ...so I know the prayer is needed ...:)
