I am planning on including the sand ceremony in my wedding. My only question is, when is this performed. After the vows are said or when? Also I want to include some other African related traditions in my wedding ceremony. Aside from jumping the broom and the exchange of gifts, are there any more meaningful things I can do that want be overwhelming for the wedding? I don't want to make the ceremony itself too long, you know?

Oh man, the sand ceremony is beautiful! For our wedding, my husband and I (I still blush at the thought of calling him my husband..lol) had the sand ceremony after we exchanged rings, before we were pronounced husband and wife. I cried like a baby, don't think there was a dry eye out there. Also, we chose to set the moment to music by having Natalie Cole's song "Inseperable" playing softly in the background.
As far as you trying to infuse your ceremony with other African elements, I opted to use rich, vibrant fabrics as accents. For example, I had a shawl made out of a cream and brown patterned chitenge (this is just a piece of cloth similar to kente cloth, just from Zambia where I am from) Our colors were cream and chocolate brown with gold and copper accents which I felt evoked a more traditional Zambian feel. In fact, we wre able to find gold and copper colored sand for the ceremony which really tied everything together. Depending on where you're getting married, you may also be able to infuse an African vibe through your music. We had a drum solo play before a softer, more jazzy tune ushered the groom and ring bearer, maid of honor and flower girl in. Then I walked down the aisle to "Malaika" sung by Miriam Makeba and Harry Belafonte. The song is sung in Swahili but loosely translates to a young couple declaring their love for eachother and intent to marry one another, its a really pretty song.
Happy planning and may you be blessed in your marriage!

Thanks Taunyana for the info. Sounds like your wedding day was the way I pray mine to be; filled with love and happiness. The song that you mentioned "Malaika", was that off of a CD or a collection of music from one of the artist? Sounds beautiful......
Be Blessed.....
Taunyana I am very serious...your description was very vivid and I totally enjoyed it. Thank you so much for entertaining me during my lunch hour. :-)

As far as your question Ms Laneirh, since I already knew the song, I just downloaded the version that I liked off the Internet. I did do a lil investigating for you tho and found that the song is on a two disc set that Amazon.com titles "An evening with Belafonte/Makeba/ The Magic of Makeba." I believe Miriam Makeba also did a version by herself so its more a matter of what you prefer. Let me know if I can help you with anything else.
And to Ms Rhonda and Ms Charlotte thank you ladies for your encouragement, I am a budding writer and have yet to play around with romance writing, perhaps my marriage is bringing out a softer side of me.
