I was at a wedding on Saturday and my aunt told me, "You know when you come down the aisle you have to do it on the upswing." I was like what??? She said it's supposed to be "good luck" if the bride is walking down the aisle when the minute hand is going up. (Ex: 5:31 or later). I said to her "You country people never ceases to amaze me". lol They always have an old wives tail about EVERYTHING. LOL So, my ceremony is supposed to start at 5pm, but I'm going to have it start 15 minutes later so that I'll be coming down on the "upswing" around 5:31. Have you ever heard of this?

I thought I heard them all! Never heard of this one.
I'm a married woman as of December 2, 2006.

Nope, I've never heard of this before either. My family is from the South and they have all kinds of stories and sayings, but this one is new to me.
Delight yourself in The Lord & He will give you the desires of your heart!Ps 37
I've never heard of this one, I'll have to ask my mom and grandmum. Let me find out I'm gonna have stall a little, my ceremony is supposed to start at 5p also.
Wow. I've never heard of that. I guess I'll have to ask my grandma or another elderly lady about this.
Born Blessed!
Please let me know what they say ladies. I swear this is a new one for me.
I've heard of it, but it I heard it from a witch. Witch meaning a person who actively practices Wicca. It's because when looking at the clock, the hands are positioned in the upright or upper position - signifying that the marriage, event, or whatever is on the up/good/good omen versus being on the down/bad/bad omen. I don't practice wicca, but I am getting married on the upswing, wearing a veil over my face, etc. all of those superstitions about evil spirits...
Yes, I have heard of it. Classy too is correct in her explanation about it. I too am no witch, but I will be getting married @ 6:32pm, w/a full veil on my head, etc. just to ward off whatever "evil" decides to attempt to rear its ugly head (in the form of FH's family of course).

News to me too!
Each One Teach One!
Another one is about the candles. If candles are lit on your wedding day and they go out it means an evil spirit is near by. I'm not having a unity candle ceremony for my outside wedding. Wind or no wind. Candles do not need to be going out. lol.
That's new to me too Classy.
Delight yourself in The Lord & He will give you the desires of your heart!Ps 37
Wow, I'm no witch either. But, thanks for the info. I will be walking down on the "upswing". lol
I have never heard that one but it sounds good.
Introducng the new Mrs. Durrant!!!
I am learning so much on here today. Classy, my ceremony is outside and last week I called the site and asked if people usually do the unity candles and they said yes, I had then decided not to do unity candle only because I didn't want to deal with the flame going out. Now after hearing this I will definitely start thinking of alternatives. Open for suggestions ladies.
WHAT!! Candles blowing out now too?!
I will be scratching that off my list as well. I learn so much on here, it's not even funny.
Anymore "ideas" I should know about? Put me on now..time's tickin'!
"I's married now" - "The Color Purple"
no candles at my outside wedding lol
I never heard about the upswing, however I have heard about the candle. To each it's own, but I dont believe in that. Thats like saying if you break a mirror you get years of bad luck, or if a black cat cross your path.

You can do the sand ceremony. My sister didn't do either, she did a "wine" ceremony. It turned out nice.
How did the wine ceremony go?

u took the words right out of my mouth. we are servinf different wines anyway so we can incorporate one of my favs.
It's just like the sand ceremony, instead you use wine. One is white wine, the other is a red wine. Then you combine the two and drink it. I'll try to find the link about it and post it. However, my sister's pastor refused to include wine, so they used grape juice and something else, non-alcoholic.
Wonderful idea Askalot.
(Your sister's pastor sounds just like my pastor)

I never heard about the upswing thing but I have heard about the candles blowing out and jumping the broom and landing at the same time.
The Upswing is tradition from Asian cultures. I have never heard of the candle blowing out. Good thing my wedding is inside.

Now, this is something else that I've never heard of before. You have to land at the same time on both feet, flat?
yuo, sept. originally, now i am quoting history, since the slaves could not be legally wed they jumped the broom, ok then they would jump it forwards and backwards to and whichever gender stumbled the mate would rule the house. as tradition evolved the jumping was only done frontward adn in sync to ward off evil, and to ensure a happy marriage. foklore states that if you are not even and flat then ur house will have problems. so I AM practicing........lol
That's funny Raysbride because I did not read that part. I read and was advsd by elderly the reason for jumping the broom of course comes from the facts that slaves cld not marry but there was a little more significance. The broom actually has representation. The handle represents the uniting of 2 families by God and the sprays for our ancestors who were scattered all about. Whoever jumps the highest, rules the house. That is the version my Reverand will be saying at our ceremony. In regards to all the other things, I am wearing a blusher w/my veil to please fh but I'm not worried about the upswing, downswing or the candle going out since I am taking all the protection I need into my marriage GOD. We both know and realize with his grace and blessing, that is all thats required. I hope I didn't get too serious ladies.

Learn somthing new EVERYDAY! :-)
I plan on heeding the following traditions (more for fun than fear):
-Lighting unity candle inside at the reception and then maybe placing a glass cylinder to prevent an accidental blowout.
-Speaking our vows/marrying on the upswing
-Wearing a blusher to ward off negative energy and ensure that no one meets my gaze before I reach the groom and make full eye contact
-If the bride sheds a tear on the wedding day, she will never cry again in her marriage
-The bride should step with her right foot first into the church and her new home to ensure good luck
Okay Ladies, I'm from the South and have never heard of such wives tales, but what I do know is "NO WEAPON FORMED AGAINST ME SHALL PROSPER" & "IF GOD BE FOR US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US!!!
"To Flow As One Is Love's Reward"
Iknow that's right Traycee
