We did a head table. Both DH and I hate the "all eyes on us" type thing and would have been a bit uncomfortable with the isolation of a sweetheart table. We are very social people and love being in the midst of our friends so a head table worked well for us. Plus with a head table you normally require less centerpieces because you have less numbers of tables and your bridesmaid bouquets can be used as the flowers for the head table.
"I'm a work in progress, God is not through me yet"
I also don't like the "on display" feeling of a sweetheart table.
Since it was a semi-formal small gathering and we wanted to promote a family atmosphere, I was also dead-set against a head table. I feel it kind of puts a wall between you and your guests.
We sat with my sisters(bridesmaids), my parents, my sister's boyfriend, and the bestman at a regular round table. The other groomsman sat with his wife at the table where she was sitting. (I hate the thought of splitting couples up at receptions.)
At some receptions, people also sit all together at a few long rectangular tables for family-style dinners with no head table.
Everyone has their preferences. You have to do what works best for your gathering.
We had a Sweetheart Table. The immediate family members had tables on each side of our table (which included the Wedding Party). So they were in the front too, just off to the sides.
I'm a married woman as of December 2, 2006.

We had a small head table...We didn't like the "display" of a sweetheart table..Plus-practicality ruled out: Our space was limited, and our wedding party was small so we decided to put them with us at the front...So it didn't look like a huge panel of judges at the head table either...
I have seen wedding parties so huge there was 2 or three head tables! I mean like the bride and groom and some wedding party at the table on the top tier, then 2 more tables in a stair step manner...I personally think thats A Lot, and not very intimate....! but she had like 30 people in the bridal party! So 10 each!
I dont know either, because i want to be close to all my siblings as well as the bridal party, so might not even do a 'head table' or a 'sweetheart table'- will invent another formula which is more personal and intimate- I need my brothers close to me for example and they are not in the bridal party, it wouldnt be the same without them on the table- PLUS they make me laugh till i get stitches- lol- but my 3 sisters are part of my bridal party and need them too!!- Decisions decisions!! too many and too little time
Thanx for your responses ladies, they were a great help. I think I will settle for a headtable as well as the scrutiny of a sweetheart table might be too much.

Dreamgurl, it sounds like you could benefit from the use of several rectangular tables for family-style seating or a mixture of both rectangular and rounds. That would give the intimacy and closeness you want.

How about a small round table for the 2 of u (both seating facing the same direction). Then 2 rectangle tables 1/2 a meter (or less)away on either side (one on your right and one on DH's left). You can have half the bridal party on each table plus bride's family on the far right and groom's family on the far left.
Thank you ViSisters these are some great ideas- Some factors which seem really trivial mean so much at the end of the day dont they!! Thats why wedding planning is so time intensive. I really want to be close to my siblings- I am a pea in a big pod and it will be as much their day as it is mine!(not to the same extent but I am sure you get the picture)
Were having a round sweetheart table and two long square table, in front of us on each side.facing each other. The Male Gents is on my FH side and the Ladies of Honor is on my side. The wedding party is facing each other, their is a center aile for guest to talk to us as well as everyone in the wedding party, equally. Something like Board Diva's pic. Just imagine the table is turned inward facing each other. My corrdinator came up with that idea, and I thought that was a good idea. My guest will be in round table alittle from us but not far away.
Which are you doing/did at your wedding? And what are/were your reasons?

we had a sweetheart table + 1 (for my son) I really wanted just the head table, but my coordinator kinda talked me out of it!! :(
Neither.
