Horror Story

This weekend one of my dear friends is getting married.(July 9th,2005) She went to Zales to purchase her fiances' wedding band in May. It's was a speacial order item that was suppose to be in the store three weeks after ordering. She called the store in mid June and was told that the ring was being shipped from an outside dealer and they would get it in three days. She called three days later and still no ring. She spoke to a manager who assured her that the ring would be there by the end of the month. Everytime she called they made excuses for why they didn't have the ring. She's been to Zales everyday this week about the ring, today one of the sales associates told her that there was no chance of her getting the ring before Saturday and said "what do you want me to do, it's not my fault". So now she has to find another ring before Saturday. That's bad business and it's not the first time they've had such an extreme mess up. I can only imagine her frustration.

Gosh Almighty!

What a terrible situation. I know exactly how she feels. She can use her Father's ring until her Fiancee's ring comes in FINALLY. SHe should also ask the manager what they can offer her as compensation. Usually it will be a small token like a pendant or a coupon or even a discount on her ring. She may consider sueing through small claims court, but that can be extreme. Tell her to just relax. I FORGOT the wedding band for my hubby at a salon and he went on our honeymoon for 2 weeks with my dad's ring on his finger. We didn't get his ring blessed until 6 months later! LOL

Re: Horror Story

wow, sometimes you think you've heard it all. I went thru something similar with a christmas gift I had personalized thru a jeweler. It didn't come in until the middle of Jan. And it was ordered in Oct. Finally when it came it was wrong and after I called and wrote a couple of letters, I was given the product for free. I think the idea of wearing your father's ring is great, if he'll part with his own. Good Luck to the bride to be.

Re: Horror Story

Nada. Basically their attidudes are like 'get over it'. So she called Zales Corporate Headquarters and filed a complaint she also did an online complaint with the BBB.
And , Rosetta, I suggested using her fathers ring but it's too small.

Re: Horror Story

It's best to check with the BBB before ordering anything. And after reading this 'Horror Story' I checked them out and I see that dealing with Zales and having an issue resolved is sketchy. Maybe they'll take care of the problem maybe they won't. But they should have offered a loaner or something until her ring came in.

sassymommie Let's get creative! How about his dad, favorite uncle or best friend? Have the jeweler give you a loaner just until the right one comes in.

UDATE: They gave her a refund but kept the special order fee of $25.00, can you believe that, and shes persuing it with the corporate headquarters. She's going to a jeweler in Philadelphia where the ceremony is going to take place.

Good for her. I'm no fan of a witch hunt, or getting something for nothing, but they should at least accept responsibility for the error. And I'm sure they will. I'm glad she'll be able to find another ring on such a short notice. All the best to your friend Sassymommie37

About 10 yrs ago a woman I used to work w/ went w/ her then fiance to pick out her ring at Kays Jewelers & about a week or so after receiving it they went to another store to have it appraised & insured & found out it was nearly worthless!!! They were over charged by a few thousand & with the appraisal in hand went back to Kay Jewelers to get their $ back. I don't remember what happened after that but I think that an appraisal & insurance is really a girls best friend!

Re: Horror Story

It is just terrible that a business doesn't take responsibility for their errors. When enough people began to boycott Zales for their bad business perhaps they will be more willing to practice "the customer is always right". They have caused your friend much grief and anxiety, that in and of itself is worth the refund and the special order fee. I hope that Zales Corporate Headquarters refunds the special order fee. That is truly awful what happend to her. I wish her all the best in getting a new ring.

We've both called corporated headquarters and received no results. It's no surprise that the same corporation that owns Zales owns Kays and Bailey,Banks, and Biddle. I promise to call them everyday until something is done.

This whole story just blows me away. I'd like to, with everyones permission, post these emails in a book in my store. It would be a true horror if they get away with this.

My fiance brought my ring from Bailey's Banks & Biddle in Washington DC. When he took it back to be sized they lost my ring and had to refund him is money. We went to a different jeweler and got a better ring.

P.S. I thought I was the only one with a horry story.

Re: Horror Story

I was just curious. Has anyone ever bought jewelry from an on-line jeweler? If so what was your experience?

Re: Horror Story

Update: After numerous telephone calls indluding a conference call with the corporate office and the Manhattan store manager,(who hung up on her when she told him what the call was in reference to), the regional manager finally called her. He told her he was going to be away until 8/8/05 because he's getting married (ironic)so he'd have to address this issue when he gets back.(LOL) Well she contacted the news media and this is what they had to say: We received your e-mail about your problem with Zales. I contacted the head of media relations for Zales (Patrick), who said he would handle this situation along with the Director of Customer Service (Steve). I forwarded your e-mail along to them with your information, and one of them should be contacting you shortly to fix this issue. They promised to keep me posted with updates. If you do not hear from them, or feel that they are not helping you, please let me know and I will step in. Thanks for your e-mail, and keep watching NBC10! Sarah Rooney, Researcher, NBC10 Consumer Alert. Mark S., tZales regional manager, call before leaving for his nuptials to say she would have her ring in three weeks.

So sad that she had to go to such extreme measures. Great that she put her foot down and is getting results.

Re: Horror Story

Let me tell you ladies, my fh purchased my engagement ring from zales, it is a princess cut, platinum ring. About 3-4 weeks after purchasing the ring my diamond cmae out on the side. We went back to zales and told them what happened, at first they was acting like it was nothing they could do( mind you we have insurance on the ring). My mother made told them that if they didnt fix my ring she was going to call the new. Long story short, They fixed my ring. I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK THERE FOR MY WEDDING RING OR MY FH RING.

Re: Horror Story

omg! I would never buy anything from anyone owned by the DeBeers Mining Corp (Zales, Kay, Bailey's). They are the main reason we have this blood diamond conflict in Africa. I will never ever support them. I have opted to not have a diamond in my ring. I'm going for my birthstone (blue topaz). But if I were to wish for a diamond I would peep out Jewelers for clean diamonds (http://www.phrusa.org/campaigns/sierra_leone/jewel_bullets.html). They make sure the diamonds that they use don't come from areas of conflict (areas such as the Congo, Sierra Leone, Rwanda & Uganda). The whole deal with the war in the Congo can be summed up to diamonds and our cell phones (coltan is abundant in the congo and allows our cellphones, computers, tv's hold an electrical charge).

There is no rock in the world worth the degradation and blood of my people.

Re: Horror Story

We got our rings from Helzberg Diamonds at the suggestion of a friend of mine who worked there. She told me she enjoyed the fact that her company supported the Clean Diamonds Act and follows the Kimberly Process. She said as part of her training they spent a lot of time teaching them about conflict diamonds and EVERYONE had to be familiar with that Clean Diamonds Act or they could be fired. They also had to be able to teach customers about it too. Many people don't beleive that the diamond process is foolproof but we should definitely support companies that can mention these processes and are familiar with this act. Here is the link for Helzberg:Helzberg Policy
I think I remember her mentioning it to my fiance becasue he knew (to his chagrin) that I didn't want a diamond after I'd read about conflict diamonds in my National Geographic back in 2003. I think being educated is best so definitely ask your companies if they can attest to this.

Amen sis! All I want is my birthstone (blue topaz) with white amethyst blended with moissanite for the diamond effect w/o the diamonds.
