My friend who got married approx. 2 years ago told me that the inner envelope has to remain blank. Is that true? She said it was too much work to handwrite all of those invites. approx. 150 Each invite is addressed on the outer envelope to the head of the household for example Mr. & Mrs. James Green. The inner envelopes are blank now so what I was going to do was put the family's name on it for example The Greens Family. I figured that would cover everyone including children.
Now for single people I would put on the our envelope Mr. Green and the inner envelope Mr. James Green and guest. As far as etiquette is concerned what's the correct way because she says that no one even looks at the inner envelope.
When I get an invite. I tear open the outer envelope and I keep the inner envelope to hold the invitation and all its inserts ie reception card, direction cards, etc. for safe keeping. What do I do? (hope I did not confuse anyone.)

I am like you the inner envelope is always addressed but I have seen the outer envelope include childrens names.
I addressed my inner envelopes. For example, I would have my outer envelope addressed, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Smith. Then you can do the inner envelope as just Mr. and Mrs. Smith without the first name. There are a few ways you can address the inner envelope depending on whether you go formal or informal for the outer envelope.
We have a great article that addresses this issue called Addressing your Invitations. It can be tricky. On your inner envelope you put the names of the invitees. No abbreviations.
