Marriage license

For all of you married ladies, or any of you who may be able to answer this question, we are getting married in Pennsylvania, but we will be coming from Atlanta, and Pennsylvania has a 3 day waiting period for marriage licenses. Now I read on a website that this waiting period may be waived in special circumstances for a small fee. The website mentioned that this waiver is beneficial for those who are travelling from out-of-state, so I am guessing that this might be the best thing for us to do, seeing as my FH isn't planning on going back to Pittsburgh until the week of the wedding. Have any of you heard of this waiver before? I might just call to see if this is an option for us. Also, FH says that he will just fly to Pittsburgh the Tuesday morning before the wedding, and we can pick up the cerificate on Friday, but being the "planner" that I am, I would feel much more comfortable having this done earlier. If anything goes wrong, or if the certificate is not available by Friday for some reason, we will not have our marriage certificate by Saturday! I guess I'm just wondering if any of you know anything about this waiver, and also, how soon should we apply for our license. Is applying for the license the Tuesday before our Saturday wedding pushing it a bit, or from your past experience is this ok to do? I would rather us go to Pittsburgh a month or so before the wedding to apply, but FH is complaining because I have been taking quite a few trips up there recently, so another trip for the both of us isn't really in his budget right now. Thanks ladies:)

Hey TiffyB I dont know anything about how the waiver works but I do think that you are cutting it kind of close by getting it in the same week. Like you said you have to allow room for error for something as important as your marriage licenses. It would be bad if your day comes and it is not available to you.

Hey Tiffy-FH and I are going the first week of March just to be safe since the license is good for 30 days...if the trip is not in the budget, I would definetly look into the waiver thing and see if you can do it on-line...not sure how this will work since you usually have to provide documentation, but the sooner you start the better you will be able to prepare yourself

Don't know about the waiver but here in NY, we left city hall with our license in hand. It stated that there was a 24 hour waiting period before the ceremony could be performed but we had the license none the less. I never knew there was a waiting period to get a license.

I got married in New Jersey and I am not familiar with PA law, but I do think that you may be cutting it close. I would get on the phone with a live person, get names, etc. and ask some questions. You may want to apply a lot sooner. In any event I wish you guys the best.

In Florida, there's a 3 day waiting period (if you didn't take marriage counseling) for residents, and for out-of-towners, there's no waiting period. Tiffy, you should speak to someone at the Clerk of Courts in PA (as Rhony suggested) and explain your situation, as well as get your questions answered.

I'm a married woman as of December 2, 2006.

Definitely take the class so you can get a discount and waive the waiting period. Make sure the person doing the class is approved by that court also. We didn't wait for our license either...WE took our class certificate in there and got our license that day....

We took the class, and as soon as the pastor signed that certificate, we went straight to the courthouse & applied. Got the discount & the waiting period waived! That was one of my most happiest moments!
