My niece Ceqouyah Aaliyah George won 2006 Carnival Princess last night! It was so awesome.
She is an 8-year-old honor roll student at Joseph Sibilly Elementary School. She won a 2005 Teacher's Choice Award and a Youth President Award for outstanding performance in the Junior Gardening and Ecology Academy. There are so many crowns in this family-- we are so blessed. She is the youngest niece. Now all the sisters & cousins are winners.
They do work hard on their talents. Years before entering a competiton. It always pays off. Going to thesae things are so nerve racking! Any of you been in a competition? I only have one title: Miss Alpha Phi Omega. But my sister in law (eloi's sister} has 3.

I'll try and answer your question CharlotteModebe. In the Caribbean, there's a annual, exotic festival celebrating the city's cultural diversity on different islands called Carnival or some people may call it a "Fete". Teenage girls compete right before the finale of a Parade on different talants. Its really exciting to everyone all around and very competative like any other Pagent I would say. Its an entire month of celebration and holidays.
Once they win, I believe they go on to bigger competitions in the Caribbean and World Wide.
I hope this helps... You can also check out this web site http://www.vinow.com/general_usvi/carnival/ .
Don't you guys have junkanoo in the Bahamas? I am sure there must be a Miss Junkanoo. We are all about eauty pagents. There are so many of them a year! They go on to international and world wide competitions.
My cousin, K'nishu Connor came in 1st place for her junior high school competition and was her first one ever! So it runs through the community like quicksilver. Everyone gets involved and chooses a contestant to back.
Our Niece Kimisha Counts won best talent at Miss World 2005. She was Carnival Queen and international talented teen before that. It is Hal Jackson's Talented teen. That is for girls in the states.
They are lots of fun. But so very stressful!

Seagrape thank you so much for the info. I was actually wondering if you meant something like the trinidad and tabago carnival. Thanks again.
Rosey as for your question...yes we do have Junkanoo. Atually our Junkanoo is a Bahamian festival that occurs during the dark hours of morning on the 26th of December and again bringing in its first hours of light on the first day of the new year. Thousands dance through Bay Street, Nassau's town center, like a wild ocean of colour, while deep goat skin rhythms reverberate off the surrounding walls and cow bells chatter over the singing of brass horns. Bahamian Junkanoo
This is a sample of my culture. It is a very large parade that starts 1:00am and end the next day, large groups compete for large sums of money but there is not "Miss Junkanoo" competition going on.
