planning from out of town

Hi Ladies,
I am a virgin to this site, but have spent the last 2 hours jotting down ideas and websites from all of the forums. I have a year (almost to the day) until my big day. My fiance and I are both from Chicago and are getting marriend there, however we currently reside in New Orleans. I have a wedding coordinator, but would like any advice on how to handle planning a wedding when you are a thousand miles away!! For example, do I get the dress in New Orleans or Chicago, how often should we plan to make trips to Chicago, how much should I expect or want the coordinator to do? My best friend and mother are both in Chicago and agree to do whatever I need them to, but I am not sure what I should have them do. HELP PLEASE!!

Re: planning from out of town

Welcome to the sisterhood!! I'm in the same situation. I live in Houston, my FH just moved to Augusta, GA from Killeen, TX and the wedding is in Birmingham. My wedding is August 26th. Lucky you for having a coordinator as well as your best friend and mother. That should definitely keep you on track as far as a timeline is concerned. I purchased my dress in Bham because it was really important to me to have my best friend and aunt with me through the process of looking and making a final decision. We've been engaged for just over two years. I go home for every break from school (about every 3 months) and take care of things. You know you can do quite a bit online and where you are like picking attire for your attendants. Designers like Alfred Angelo and Men's Warehouse are pretty much everywhere so you could go to a location near you and make a selection. I can tell you that you're biggest challenge will be scheduling yourself during the time you're home. You may not have the luxury to look at 10 or 15 different venues, and talk to 4 or 5 photographers during your time there. And you'll need to go in to potential vendors with a good idea of what you want. In the meantime just make sure your coordinator, friend and mother know exactly what you want when they're doing things for you. And of course, you're now a part of the most resourceful and creative group of women I know. I'm sure you'll get plenty of ideas and advice on anything.

Welcome Yhslady! I would definitely buy the gown in New Orleans, that way you can make the appointments for the fittings easily. There are so great places in CHI to have your ceremony, and how fortunate to have family there to help you.

Hey there Yhslady and welcome to the site! I agree that you should buy your dress in New Orleans, that would make things easier for you as far as fittings are concerned. You are very fortunate to have the support of your family in addition to a wedding coordinator. And as Hampton_S said you are now amongst some pretty resourceful women who are always willing to help. Congratulations and good luck!
