I had silk also for the same reason, but my first marriage I had real flowers-so I agree with Rhony...personal choice...they both work and look great! :0
My centerpieces were silk flowers, my bouquet was real, boutineers and corsages were real and my bridesmaids all carried silk flowers that my florist mixed a few real roses & fresh greenery in with. You couldn't even tell that their entire bouquet wasn't real flowers.
There is no certain etiquette when it comes to flowers. Like the ladies said, personal choice. I went with silk centerpieces due to budget constraints. I would have loved to have used all fresh flowers but for the types of tall and wild centerpieces that I like, they would have been waaayyy out my budget. Now good silks are expensive as well but still cheaper overrall.

we did silk flowers. it was a huge difference in price. besides that, after watching my mother's wedding done in silk flowers before my own, i knew i could work wonders with them also. i like real flowers but i wantes to also preserve the bouquet, that i made. ;-)
We used all real flowers for the gazebo decoration, my bouquet, my attendants' bouquets, boutineers and corsages. In the reception room, I used preserved orchid heads on the welcome table and to add to the silk greenery candlelight centerpieces I created. I just couldn't see handing so much money over to the florist for some simple centerpieces I could create myself so inexpensively. Instead, I added more color to the room with organza overlays on the tables and tiebacks on the chairs. The favor boxes at each place setting also had silk gerbera daisy heads attached.
Silks for the alter arrangement. The bouquets and bouts were all real flowers. I ordered roses from Global Rose and arranged them myself.
My Ebay silk flowers for the bridal party came in. They are photogenic, but the person who made them put those tacky..tacky...tacky !!TACKY!!"dew drops" on them. If I wasn't so burned out by the DIYing that I've already done for my centerpieces and other things, I would have done the bouts and bouquets myself.
I don't think there is an etiquette (sp?) for flowers. We used silk flowers, but they still were not cheap. The nice thing is having your bouquet as a keepsake that lives beyond the wedding day.
Plus you can buy them early and get the bouquets done and out of the way. With real flowers if you have the budget to get it handled then its good. If you are handling them yourself or with a "friend" there is so much to consider when buying/ordering, housing them in cold storage, etc....But either way be picky about who you use and get quotes!
Even with silks you don't want to be cheap, because some silk flowers look more elegant and realistic than others.
Heyyyyyy Ladies!!!

It is a matter of personal choice.
I used silk flowers because I wanted to preserve our memories.
