Things you don't know about your family

This is completely off topic, but something that we tend to ignore..
When Katrina hit New Orleans I didn't sleep for days. I was scared to answer my phones when 504 area codes showed up because I didn't want to hear anything bad, and was stuck on CNN like there was no other channel on the tube. We (my mother and I) couldn't locate over 90% of our family, her siblings and their children, and my step siblings and their children. We didn't have cell phone numbers or addresses, cause we didn't communicate with them that often. Right before the hurricane I found my step-sibling after not speaking to any of them for 10 years. Not intentionally, we just lost touch with each other. I spoke to my younger brother less than a week before Katrina and my fater two days before. Fast forward to Jan. 26th, 06- I'm in the shop with a bride when my cell phone rings. My SIL answered it and says with a puzzled look on her face, "it's your sister". My heart leaped because I couldn't find any of my siblings, and finally, contact! When I answered she was hysterical, screaming, and I couldn't understand a word she was saying. I told her I'd have to call her back because I had a client with me. Ten minutes later a atom bomb was dropped on me, my brother may be dead but no one knows who, other than me(the elder of 8) to get the answers. When I called the police dept. I realized how little I knew about my brother. We didn't grow up together, I didn't know his DOB or middle name. It took a little while, but I finally got some answers, I was able to identify him from his tattoos. My brother had died on 1/25/06, my husbands birthday. The hospital had no next of kin listed. I got all this simple information from a homicide detective. Things I should have known all along
Please, put something in you cell phones, your wallets, your glove compartment, list relatives phone numbers and address in a specail book.
Sharing what's been going on with me, Rosy if you feel it should be deleted do so, I won't be offened.

Niquey, I am sorry to hear this news and so sorry for your loss. I sure hope Rosey wont delete this. I don't think she will. Some of us definitely need to read this. I am sure there are a lot of us that are not in contact with some of our relatives. I am one of them. I haven't spoken to my mother and her family in years. Please know that you will continuously be in my prayers.

Re: Things you don't know about your family

I have donated personally over $5000 dollars and I don't know how many clothes to help the victims of katrina. There were a few of our brides there. I lived through a category 5 hurricane and it was devastating. It is so hard on family members who want to help but can't even contact their loved ones. I love that you shared this with us Phenomonique. We are still remembering them.

This is why we have the off topic forum. Suggested by a bride who cares. We are always here for you.

Re: Things you don't know about your family

I have mentioned this site to a few of my co workers and friends. This site is more than a wedding site. I can't even refer to it as a site and I have only been here a short time. I can refer to it as a support group. though you haven't helped me through many troubles, I see by reading through the forums that you are always there for other vibrides in the time of need. I want to say thanks in advance and God bless you all.

God's office hours are 24 hrs a day...You don't see him complaining do you????

Re: Things you don't know about your family

phenomonique, my prayers go out to you and your family. It's good to share stories whether they're happy ones or sad ones. We learn from them. I read where in your cell phone you should begin a persons' name who knows you well with the letters ICE which stands for In Case of Emergency. The EMS workers know about this and will instinctively search the cell phone for an emergency contact person. Stay strong.

God is good all the time and all the time God is good
