I didnt know that the length of the dress was determined by the age of the bridesmaids. I am in my late twenties(27)and my bridesmaids are in there mid to late twenties and my bridesmaids dresses are long. I think it depends on what style you like.
You do however have the option to do that. My bridesmaids were 15 to 17 and wore short cocktail style dresses. My wedding was black tie, but they were so young everything looked to vulgar or too frumpy on them. Let them try a few different styles on, then decide what fits best with the theme of your wedding.
I wouldn't say elaborate cause you want the focus of the attention on you.MOH usually have on the same colour or a colour within your colour scheme but a different style to the BM.Hope that is not confusing.But it is all up to you.
People always say dont let the bridesmaids dresses look too fancy. My dress is similar to my bridesmaids dress. Same kind of style. My dress will be a pick up skirt ( gathered look) and so is my bridesmaids.
My maids will be 17, 18, and 23 when I get married I will be approximately 25 or 26. Should I go for shorter dresses b/c my ladies are so young?

It is your choice.My BM ages range from 13-20 and they will be wearing long dresses.
I am having an evening wedding to I think I will do long dresses as well. Does the maid of honor get a more elaborate dress?

that is the hardest thing; finding a theme but once you do find one everything tends to fall in place.
